Correspondence, mss., and memorabilia, created by participants and supporters of the Brook Farm Institute of Agriculture and Education (a utopian community founded in West Roxbury, Mass., in 1841 by George and Sophia Ripley; due to an interest in Fourierism, reorganized as Brook Farm Phalanx in 1845; closed in 1847 because of financial difficulties), a communal farm experiment in social living, built on the ideals of self reliance, egalitarianism, and progressive political action. Includes letter from George Ripley describing the problems of living at Brook Farm and information concerning literary activities, financial contributions, speaking tours, and fund raising; mss., chiefly written by Brook Farm members after its demise, including a review written by Thomas W. Higginson of John Codman's Brook Farm : Historic & Personal Memoirs (1894); and memorabilia consisting of a handmade book of flower paintings done by Marianne Orvis for her friend Ellen Lazarus Allen in memory of Brook Farm.
