Nutrients and their impact on the Canadian environment by Canada( Book )

3 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 124 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The purpose of this report is to determine the extent to which nutrients derived from human activities may be impairing Canadian environments, contributing to quality of life concerns, or endangering health. The report examines the role of nutrients in the context of plant growth, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus derived from human activity. It describes the nitrogen & phosphorus cycles and the sources of nutrients from municipal waste, industrial discharges, agriculture & fisheries, forest management practices, and atmospheric deposition & transport. The report then reviews the effects of nutrient addition on terrestrial ecosystems, lakes, rivers, wetlands, coastal waters, and groundwater; the direct & indirect toxic effects of nutrient addition, including nitrogen toxicity of aquatic & terrestrial plants & animals and the role of nutrients in contributing to toxic algal blooms; the scientific rationale for management of anthropogenic nutrient sources, with reference to best practices in Canada & other countries; and emerging issues such as the use of runway de-icers at airports, forest fire retardants, agricultural intensification, municipal biosolids disposal, aquaculture expansion, and the siting of wastewater treatment plants. The final chapter offers conclusions on the impacts of nutrients on Canadian environments, the sources of nutrients, knowledge gaps, and future prospects for the environment. A glossary is appended

2 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 111 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This document provides an assessment of the economics and production of the Canadian agriculture and agri-food sector, examining the primary production of plant and animal commodities, the food and beverage processing industry, and changes in agricultural land use. It also gives a detailed profile of the environmental issues pertinent to the sector, examining issues such as water quality and use, agricultural inputs, and land. Examples of ways to address these issues are also identified. The assessment focuses on the environmental impacts and risks from agricultural and agri-food production. Trends in the sector are analyzed for 1971-1991, with updates from 1991 provided where possible. The document concludes with an qualitative environmental outlook for the sector on a regional basis

"During the spring and summer of 2011, Federal/Provincial/Territorial (FPT) Governments engaged producers, processors, the public and stakeholders along the value chain from across Canada in a dialogue on the Growing Forward 2 Policy Framework. Discussions focused on the four elements of the framework, namely: its two proposed policy outcomes, competitiveness and market growth, and adaptability and sustainability; and two key drivers, innovation and institutional and physical infrastructure. ... Over the course of the GF2 industry engagement process, FPT governments had the opportunity to carry out a broad dialogue with the agriculture, agri-food and agri-based products sector on the proposed GF2 policy framework . These sessions as well as on-line input, helped develop a mutual understanding between government and industry on what is required to achieve a profitable, sustainable, competitive and innovative industry that is market-responsive, anticipates and adapts to changing circumstances, and is a major contributor to the well-being of all Canadians."

Vue d'ensemble du système agricole et agroalimentaire canadien : Mai 2005 by Kathleen Kittson( )

8 editions published between 2003 and 2011 in French and held by 107 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Environmental sustainability of Canadian agriculture( Book )

6 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 100 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Agricultural decision makers at all levels require good quality information to address complex economic and environmental issues. In response, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has developed a set of science-based agri-environmental indicators that integrate information on soils, climate and topography with statistics on land use and crop and livestock management practices. The indicators provide valuable information on the overall environmental risks and conditions in agriculture and how these change over time. The indices are presented here to draw broad, national-level observations on the status and trends of agrienvironmental sustainability of the agriculture and agri-food sector. The regional variations are more explicitly discussed in the body of the report. This publication can be used as a report card of agri-environmental performance for producers, consumers and the international community and can be used to highlight areas where further efforts are required. It can also provide valuable information that decision makers can draw from when developing and evaluating agricultural policy.--Document

The foresighting project described in this report was undertaken by the Food Regulatory Issues Division of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), in collaboration with the Food Directorate of Health Canada. An environmental scan of published literature was conducted to identify emerging innovative food products, technologies and processes that could enhance food safety, nutritional composition or health attributes and that may have implications for the regulatory framework, including pre-market approval (e.g. novel foods, food additives or health claims) by Health Canada over the next 10 years. The findings were then validated and refined through engagement exercises with selected stakeholders in Canada's agri-food sector
