Concrete and rock fracture and the influence of loading rate by

Structures of quasi-brittle materials, such as concrete and rock, exhibit a pronounced size effect on the failure stress. A model based on this phenomenon, and its implications are reviewed. The R-curve for the fracture resistance, which has been derived from the size effect law, is modified to have size-dependent plateaus in the post-peak stage. This yields satisfactory predictions of the structural response for high strength concrete and limestone. The fracture parameters obtained from the size effect method are used to show that when the "strength" of concrete is increased, the fracture resistance increases by much less and, importantly, the brittleness increases significantly. Brittleness is related here to the size of the fracture process zone. The size effect method is applied to tests of concrete and limestone at various loading rates. The failure time for the concrete tests ranges over 4 decades of time, from 1 second to 3 days, and the range of the rock tests is 3 decades. An important trend is the increase in the brittleness of concrete with decrease in loading rate, possibly due to creep mechanisms. This effect is not seen in short-term tests of rock. It is also confirmed that fracture toughness decreases with increase in failure time. To further study the coupling of creep and fracture, relaxation tests of notched concrete beams were conducted. It is concluded that the relaxation is higher than linear behavior (of unnotched beams at low loads), and increases with load in the pre-peak stage. In the post-peak regime, the relaxation seems to be unaffected by the load. Also, creep/relaxation is accelerated by increase in the loading rate prior to initiation of creep/relaxation
