William Grant Still, the "Dean of African-American composers," is one of the most important cultural fiqures of any race or nationality in our history. He was the first to "crossover" from symphonic music to folk music in the concert hall. Born in Mississippi, he discovered his love for classical music from listening to the Red Seal operatic recordings that his stepfather brought home. He started his professional career working with W.C. Handy, the father of the blues, established himself as a conductor on radio, and then perfected his classical talents during the musical upsurgence in New York's Harlem Renaissance. He was and still is considered a pioneering force in the field of classical music
