Im Zug von Washington nach New York begegnet der bekannte Tennis-Champion Guy Haines einem kauzigen Herrn namens Bruno Anthony. Der Mann gibt vor, ein Verehrer des Sportlers zu sein. Er scheint alles über Guys Privatleben zu wissen und macht seinem Idol schließlich einen merkwürdigen Vorschlag: Bruno will Guys Ehefrau Miriam töten; im Gegenzug soll Guy Brunos verhaßten Vater umbringen. Ein perfekter Mord, meint Bruno, denn niemand könne den Tätern etwas nachweisen, da jedes Motiv fehle. Natürlich lehnt Guy ab. Er hält Bruno für einen harmlosen Spinner. Zwar hat er Probleme mit seiner untreuen Ehefrau, die sich von ihm scheiden lassen will. Doch niemals würde er sie töten wollen. Um so größer ist der Schock, als Miriam später tatsächlich einem Mord zum Opfer fällt - und Guy ernsthaft in Verdacht gerät. Das ZDF präsentiert zum ersten Mal die vollständige Fassung des Film. "Strangers on a train" kam 1952 unter dem Titel "Verschwörung im Nordexpreß" in die deutschen Kinos, in einer um zwei Minuten gekürzten Fassung. Der Verleih ließ mehrere Szenen (Unterredung zwischen Bruno und Guy im Zug, Miriams Ermordung, Anspielung auf den Mordfall am Tennisplatz, Morddemonstraion im Haus des Senators, Kampf zwischen Bruno und Guy auf dem Karussell) kürzen oder ganz entfernen, um eine FSK-Freigabe ab 16 Jahren zu bekommen. Die Dialoge der vom ZDF wieder eingeführten Passagen sind in der rekonstruierten Fassung deutsch untertitelt
