Alphaville : une étrange aventure de Lemmy Caution by Jean-Luc Godard( Visual )

27 editions published between 1965 and 2014 in 4 languages and held by 790 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this amalgam of sci-fi comic strip and film noir Lemmy Caution, intergalactic agent, on a mission to computer-run Alphaville, recreates the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice (see Cocteau's Orphee). Coutard's nocturnal Paris, 1965, becomes Godard's sci-fi dystopia. Long bureaucratic corridors are Kafkaesque labyrinths of power at the centre of which lies death. The film is built on contrasts - between straight lines and circles, Max Steiner-like romanticism and discordant noise, between the super ego (Alpha 60) and the suppressed id (Lemmy Caution). Robin Wood has commented that Lemmy is 'less a character than a reference' - to the popular arts where human qualities linger in a dehumanised world

The "her" in the film refers to Paris.
