Here, for the first time, architectural photographer Guillaume de Laubier takes the reader on a privileged tour of twenty-three of the world's most historic libraries, representing twelve countries and ranging from the great national monuments to scholarly, religious, and private libraries: the baroque splendor of the Institut de France in Paris; the Renaissance treasure-trove of the Riccardiana Library in Florence; the majestic Royal Monastery in El Escorial, Spain; the hallowed halls of Oxford's Bodleian Library; and the New York Public Library, a Beaux-Arts masterpiece. Also included are the smaller abbey and monastic libraries - often overlooked on tourist itineraries - each containing its own equally important collections of religious and philosophical writings, manuscripts, and church history. 100 contemporary wood buildings = 100 zeitgenössische Holzbauten = 100 bátiments contemporains en bois by Philip Jodidio( Book )

9 editions published between 2015 and 2017 in English and held by 118 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Not so very long ago, some might have considered wood a material of the past, long since replaced by more modern components such as concrete and steel. The truth is radically different. Bolstered by new manufacturing techniques and ecological benefits, wood has seen a fabulous resurgence in contemporary construction. This double-volume survey explores how architects around the world have created and invented with this elementary material. Featuring follies, very large buildings, and ambitious urban renewal schemes, it celebrates the diverse deployment of wood from architects in China, Chile, and everywhere in between. We see how wood can at once transform urban spaces, as in the Metropol Parasol in Seville by Jürgen Mayer H, and allow for sensitive interventions in natural environments, as at the Finnish Forest Research Institute by SARC Architects, or the Termas Geométricas Hot Springs Complex by Germán del Sol. True to all Taschen architecture tomes, the book pays tribute to many emerging international talents, as well as to such renowned figures as Tadao Ando to Renzo Piano. It celebrates each of these architect's vision and innovation, as well as investigating the techniques, trends, and principles that have informed their work with wood. It examines the computer guided milling that has allowed for novel new forms, the responsible harvesting that allows wood to align with our environmental concerns, and, above all, wood's enduring appeal to our senses and our psyche, comforting hectic modern lives with a sense of Arcadian beauty and simplicity."--Provided by publisher
Álvaro Siza : complete works 1952-2013 by Philip Jodidio( Book )

4 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 116 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The seminal book on Portugal's master architect. When Álvaro Siza, one of the great figures of contemporary architecture, won the prestigious Pritzker Prize in 1992, the Jury described his forms as "molded by light, [with] a deceptive simplicity about them; they are honest. They solve design problems directly ... That simplicity, upon closer examination however, is revealed as great complexity. There is a subtle mastery underlying what appears to be natural creations." Born in Matosinhos, Portugal, in 1933, Siza created his own practice in Porto in 1954, and he has been a Professor of Construction at the University of Porto since 1976. The architect can fill shelf after shelf with his awards and prizes to-date: He received the European Community's Mies van der Rohe Prize in 1988 and the Praemium Imperiale in Japan in 1997, the 2009 RIBA Gold Medal, and the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale. He has built a large number of projects in Portugal, and worked on the restructuring of the Chiado area of Lisbon following a devastating 1988 fire. Siza designed both the Portuguese Pavilion for the 1998 Lisbon World's Fair and the 2005 Serpentine Pavilion in London in collaboration with Eduardo Souto de Moura. He completed the Serralves Foundation (Porto, 1998), and the Museum for the Iberê Camargo Foundation in Porto Alegre, Brazil in 2008

1000 chairs by Charlotte Fiell( Book )

2 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 58 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Chairs displayed on their own as pure form. More than any other piece of furniture, the chair has been subjected to the wildest dreams of the designers. The particular curve of a backrest, or the twist of a leg, the angle of a seat or the color of the entire artifact all reflect the stylistic consciousness of each era. From Gerrit Rietveld and Alvar Aalto to Verner Panton to Eva Zeisel, from Art Nouveau to International Style, from Pop Art to Postmodernism, the phenomenon of the chair is so complex that it requires a reference work as comprehensive as this to do it full justice. They are all here: Thonet s bentwood chairs and Hoffmann s sitting-machines, Marcel Breuer's Wassily chair and Ron Arad's avant-garde armchairs. The book devotes one page to each chair, displayed on its own as pure form, with biographical and historical information about the chairs and their designers. A special treat for anyone who loves design and a must for collectors!"--

Piano : Renzo Piano building workshop, 1966 to today by Philip Jodidio( Book )

2 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 22 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Some architects have a signature style. What sets Piano apart is that he applies his coherent set of ideas in extraordinarily different ways. It takes more than a quick glance to see his touch on such individual structures as the Pompidou Center, The New York Times Building in New York, and his 72-story London Bridge Tower. Each project is a renaissance, because, as Piano himself explains: One of the great beauties of architecture is that each time, it is like life starting all over again. This updated monograph, illustrated by photographs, sketches, and plans, spans Piano's career to date and the many existences of his singular aesthetic. It includes new photographs of the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Kimbell Art Museum Expansion in Fort Worth, Texas, as well as a sneak peek at his current project, Valletta City Gate in Valletta, Malta."--Publisher

Edward Weston, 1886-1958 by Edward Weston( Book )

1 edition published in 2017 in English and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Few photographers have created such a legacy as Edward Weston (1886-1958). After a decade of successfully making photographs with painterly soft-focus techniques, he became the driving figure behind a group of West Coast artists dubbed Group f/64, which pioneered the sharp, precise school of Straight Photography. With that stylistic leap, Weston's career moved into high gear, creating photographs of extraordinary sensual realism, perfectly poised between compositional stillness and searing intensity. With nudes, nature studies, and myriad perspectives on the dramatic Californian landscape, Weston's works aimed to locate the very substance and quintessence of the thing itself. In this concise monograph, we gather some of the finest Weston works to explore how he pursued and achieved this aim whether with a landscape, shell, or naked body." -- Provided by publisher
