Unfading light : contemplations and speculations by Sergiĭ Bulgakov( )

6 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 337 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With its scholarly discussions of myth, German idealist philosophy, negative theology, and mysticism, shot through with reflections on personal religious experiences, Unfading Light documents what a life in Orthodoxy came to mean for Sergius Bulgakov on the tumultuous eve of the 1917 October Revolution. Written in the final decade of the Russian Silver Age, the book is a typical product of that era of experimentation in all fields of culture and life. Bulgakov referred to the book as miscellanies, a patchwork of chapters articulating in symphonic form the ideas and personal experiences that he and his entire generation struggled to comprehend. Readers may be reminded of St. Augustine's Confessions and City of God as they follow Bulgakov through the challenges and opportunities presented to Orthodoxy by modernity."--Publisher's description
The burning bush : on the Orthodox veneration of the Mother of God by Sergiĭ Bulgakov( Book )

3 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 201 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The mother of God has had very different depictions throughout the many branches of Christianity. "The Burning Bush" is a scholarly exploration of the Virgin Mary and what she means to the Russian Orthodox Church, where she more often referred to as Mary the Mother of God. Although similar in concept and veneration of the figure, the Roman Catholic Church and Russian Orthodox Church worship very differently, and author Sergius Bulgakov does well in explaining this branch of Christianity that is foreign to many readers. "The Burning Bush" is a very much recommended read for any who want to better understand the wider scope of Christianity
Jacob's ladder : on angels by Sergiĭ Bulgakov( Book )

4 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 168 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Few of the great Russian author Sergius Bulgakov's writings achieve the lyrical heights of Jacob's Ladder. In this book, originally published in 1929, Bulgakov explores the doctrine of angels and their importance for contemporary humanity. He frames his work with meditations on the meaning of love, not as a sentimental indulgence, but as a way of understanding the deep, tender, self-sacrificing, personal knowledge that is both at the heart of a Trinitarian God and in the midst of relationships between human beings and their guardian angels. These discussions on the creation, function, nature, appearances and incorporeality of angels lead also to reflections on the incarnation and human nature, especially the role of the sexes, death, and the Christian hope of resurrection. Jacob's Ladder completes the development of Divine Sophia--on the Wisdom of God in creation--begun in The Burning Bush and The Friend of the Bridegroom, which together constitute Bulgakov's first dogmatic trilogy
