Power to rise : the story of the National Ballet of Canada by James E Neufeld( Book )

4 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 250 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Power to Rise is the first fully documented account of the artistic and organizational history of this remarkable Canadian cultural institution. Based on archival sources, many hitherto unavailable, of the National Ballet of Canada and the National Archives of Canada, the book includes first-hand accounts of more than fifty of the personalities closely associated with the company throughout its life." "In Power to Rise, we learn of the inhospitable environment in which the National Ballet struggled to establish itself, of its close calls with bankruptcy, and of its evolution into a full-fledged professional company. We witness the events that led to Franca's arrival from England, the uncompromising and often controversial idealism of her artistic leadership, the company's dramatic and sometimes perilous growth to a level that prompted the greatest dancers of the age - among them Rudolf Nureyev and Erik Bruhn - to come to work with company's own stars, including Karen Kain and Veronica Tennant." "The text is illustrated with over 140 photographs, drawn from the company's enormous archives as well as from private sources, that re-create the characters, settings, moods, and artistry of the company."--Jacket

Lois Marshall : a biography by James E Neufeld( Book )

5 editions published between 2010 and 2017 in English and held by 71 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Although she called herself "just a singer," soprano Lois Marshall (1925-97) became a household name across Canada during her thirty-four-year career and remains one of the foremost figures in the history of Canadian music. She rubbed shoulders with Canada's musical aristocracy - Glenn Gould, Sir Ernest MacMillan, Jon Vickers, Maureen Forrester - but Marshall always held first place in the hearts of her adoring fans." "At the height of the Cold War, Moscow and St. Petersburg embraced her as warmly as Canada had. Yet Marshall remained true to her Canadian roots and to Toronto, her lifelong home. This first-ever biography recounts her dazzling career and paints an intimate portrait of the woman, her childhood encounter with polio, and her complex relationship with her teacher and mentor, Weldon Kilburn. Hers is the tale of a warm, courageous woman; it is also the story of classical music in Canada."--Jacket

Betty Oliphant : a life in dance( Visual )

1 edition published in 1999 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Profile of Betty Oliphant, founder and guiding light of Canada's National Ballet School. Oliphant herself tells much of her own story, beginning with her childhood ballet training in her native England; the influence of legendary ballerina Anna Pavlova; her marriage and move to Canada; and the circumstances that led her to open her first ballet school in Toronto. She recalls how she joined forces with British ballerina Celia Franca to establish the National Ballet School, the training ground for the newly formed National Ballet of Canada. She examines and compares the impact of Russian dancers Rudolf Nureeyv and Mikhail Baryshnikov, both of whom appeared as guest artists with the company. Also discussed are her bout with depression in later life and the psychotherapy that enabled her to surmount it; the realization of her dream of her own theater; her retirement in 1989; the publication of her autobiography [Miss O: my life in dance, 1996]; her continuing involvement in the dance world; and the various awards and honors she has received. Throughout the program her former students, many of whom danced with the National Ballet of Canada, present their remembrances of her
