Mental abnormality and deficiency; an introduction to the study of problems of mental health by Sidney L Pressey( Book )

21 editions published between 1926 and 2009 in English and held by 250 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The authors have had two major purposes, in writing this brief volume. They have, in the first place, attempted to formulate material for a college course which should give in vigorous, very direct, practical fashion acquaintance with the major problems of mental health, and mental disease and deficiency. The writers have attempted not only to outline the primarily medical and psychiatric features of these problems of mental health, but also to show their even more fundamental relations to education, and to give some realization of the frequency with which matters involving mental abnormality appear in the affairs of everyday business and professional life. The writers have, in the second place, attempted a treatment which should be of definite practical value to those interested in various special fields of work in which problems of personality and adjustment are frequently met; they have had in mind particularly social service, personnel management, work with delinquents, and those most important functionings of the school and college which involve the student's emotional and characterological development and his educational, vocational, and recreational guidance. Introduction to the use of standard tests : a brief manual in the use of tests of both ability and achievement in the school subjects by Sidney L Pressey( Book )

20 editions published between 1922 and 1932 in English and held by 238 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The standardized measurement movement is comparatively new; in fact, the most important developments have come during the past few years. Particularly did the extensive psychological work done in the Army during 1917 and 1918 give a new impetus to the movement, and establish new methods in testing. As a result of the Army work, and of continued trial of tests in the schools, it may be said that the usefulness of the test method is now an established fact. And tests are being used to an extraordinary extent, both in the public schools and in the selection of employees by business houses. A large number of excellent tests are now available; methods are gradually becoming standardized. Now that tests are being used very extensively, by teachers and others not especially trained in their use, there is needed a simple and direct manual, covering tests of both ability and achievement, to make clear to such workers the fundamental facts with regard to tests, the handling of test results, and the significance to be attached to the results of testing. Particularly there is need of a systematic treatment of the ways in which test results may be used in dealing with school problems. The present brief text aims to fill, in some measure, the need for such a manual. The effort has been first of all (1) to give a clear discussion of the nature of tests, the problems that may be dealt with profitably by means of tests, simple methods for the handling of test results, and common mistakes to be avoided. Every effort has been made to keep the treatment non-technical, and to make it of the most practical character. In the second part of the manual (2) certain of the best and most representative tests in the various school subjects are presented. In the third part (3) tests of ability, particularly tests of general intelligence, have been discussed in the same way, with special emphasis on the practical uses of test results. Finally, in the fourth part (4) certain general principles with regard to the way in which test work should be organized, and related to practical problems, have been emphasized. The manual is thus intended as an introductory handbook in the use of tests. The effort has been, throughout, to suit the book to the needs of the busy teacher, principal, or superintendent. Methods of handling test scores; brief lessons in tabulating, finding medians, comparison with norms, making and interpreting tables and graphs, and use of tests in dealing with everyday school problems-with practice exercises by Luella Cole( Book )

11 editions published between 1926 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 68 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The present almost universal employment of standard tests, in the public schools, has made it essential that there should be available for teachers a brief and simple statement of those few elements of statistical method which it is necessary for a teacher to know, if the best use is to be made of the results of the testing. The books on statistics at present available are, for the most part, too elaborate and technical for the needs of the busy teacher. They present many special methods which are rarely if ever used by her, and they usually omit explanation of certain elementary procedures about which some discussion is necessary for those who are attempting to acquaint themselves with statistical methods without the aid of an instructor. It is for such teachers in service that these lessons are especially intended; they enable a teacher to instruct herself in the few essential statistical procedures which every teacher should know. The lessons have also been found very valuable, however, in first courses dealing with mental and educational tests. Methods of tabulating, using norms, and graphing can be really learned only by using them; the chapter on statistical methods in the usual book on tests is of necessity inadequate. These practice exercises will actually establish these skills. It is believed, in short, that for both the teacher who is instructing herself and for the student in a beginning course on tests these lessons will prove of decided helpfulness"--Book. Psychology of adolescence by Karl C Garrison( Book )

2 editions published in 1970 in English and held by 30 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The aim of this edition is twofold. First, the book is designed to be of value both to adolescents and to those entrusted with the care and guidance of adolescents. This book may afford to teachers and parents a more appreciative view of adolescents and a fuller recognition of the importance of their transition from childhood to adulthood. The second aim of this book is to introduce the student to basic experimental studies, and thus lay the foundation for a critical appreciation of new studies that are constantly appearing. I have drawn heavily from recent scientific studies and current source materials. Thus youth activities in this country, surveys of various aspects of the life of adolescents, clinical studies of adolescents, and representative research studies from various sources are reviewed. The third edition has added new material relative to the needs of adolescents, the development of attitudes, heterosexuality, and youth problems today and tomorrow"--Preface.
