Er findet immer wieder Menschen, die weiterhelfen, wenn auch teilweise aus zwielichtigen Motiven. David hat Glück, wie wenige andere; während die meisten deutschen und europäischen Juden in den Tod gehen, gelingt ihm die Flucht. Der erste Teil des Films gibt Einblick in das Leben und die Tradition jüdischer Familien und Gemeinden. Er zeigt dann, wie - vor allem nach den Ereignissen des 9. November 1938 - Menschen durch ständige Bedrohung und Angst seelisch und physisch zerstört werden. Es ist dem Regisseur Peter Lilienthal gelungen, diesen erschütternden Bericht, der nicht die Anklage zum Ziel hat, sondern den Dank an alle, die zu Helfern wurden, in den Film zu übertragen
