La religieuse = the nun by Jacques Rivette( Visual )

41 editions published between 1965 and 2014 in 4 languages and held by 198 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Director Jacques Rivette's feature film adaptation of Diderot's novel was banned in France for two years for its unforgiving representation of Catholic hierarchy. Rivette explores with poetic simplicity the events through which a young woman is forced to take up life in a convent. Freely adapted from the novel, the film tells the story of sixteen year old Suzanne and her inability to comprehend the motiviations of the adults around her, who want to save her and destroy her. After a brief respite while under the tutelage of a sympathetic mother superior, Suzanne is ultimately tormented and abused, culminating in a lengthy sequence in which starved and barefoot, she is left in solitary confinement and driven to near madness. After her escape, she realizes just how unprepared she is for life outside the convent walls and relinquishes her freedom once again, accepting employment in the confines of a bordello
