Rubens and his Spanish patrons by Alexander Vergara( Book )

14 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 413 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Rubens and His Spanish Patrons examines an important and neglected aspect of the most internationally renowned artist of the seventeenth century. As a native of the Spanish Netherlands, Rubens found an audience among Spanish aristocratic and royal collectors, including the archdukes Albert and Isabella, and Philip IV, the Spanish king for whom Rubens worked as both artist and diplomat. Focusing on the artist's production for his Spanish patrons and his visits to Spain, this study also examines the presence of Rubens' works and their reception as well as the artistic environment in that country during the seventeenth century."--Jacket
The young Van Dyck( Book )

8 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 265 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"By the age of twenty-two, Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641) had produced more than 160 paintings, many of them ambitious compositions of remarkable quality. This book presents the work created during the eight years between 1613, when he was just fourteen, to his departure for Italy from Antwerp in October 1621. Were the paintings he created during these years his only legacy, he would still be recognized as one of the greatest artists of the seventeenth century. Van Dyck's precocious talents are brilliantly demonstrated in the many important works reproduced here, among them such strikingly original masterpieces as The Taking of Christ and Saint Jerome in the Desert. Others--Christ's Entry into Jerusalem and The Lamentation, for example--reveal Van Dyck at his most experimental, in search of new ways of increasing the visual impact of his compositions. Van Dyck was also one of the first painters to rise to the challenge of Rubens's omnipresent influence, evident in works such as The Crowning with Thorns."--Publisher's website

Rubens : the power of transformation by Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien( Book )

1 edition published in 2017 in English and held by 150 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The creative study of the important works of his predecessors and contemporaries occupied Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) throughout his life and left its mark on the works he produced over a period of fifty years. The comparison of his works with sculptures from Antiquity and the Renaissance, paintings by Titian, Tintoretto and Caravaggio and prints by Raimondi and Goltzius reveals a fascinating view of Rubens's surprising transformation of subjects, his new presentation of familiar pictorial themes and his skilled search for the right format. Only thus does the exceptional talent of this great master become tangible. Rubens's works continue to enchant the present-day viewer as directly as they did during his lifetime

The spirit of painting : Cai Guo-Qiang at the Prado by Guoqiang Cai( Book )

5 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 37 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"....It was his passion for learning from the great painters of the past that led Cai to turn his gaze on the Museo del Prado almost a decade ago. While his interests connect with the entire tradition of European painting, he has noted on numerous occasions that El Greco has been the primary influence on the evolution of his artistic activities. Such is Cai's admiration for that Renaissance painter that in 2009 he set out on a journey to Crete, Venice, Madrid, and Toledo....During that journey Cai's interest in other painters represented in the Museo del Prado also grew and it was from that experience...that the origins of the present exhibition at the Museo del Prado arose."--P.
