As his girlfriend's career as a pop singer grows, Paul becomes isolated from his friends and peers ('the children of Marx and Coca Cola', as the credits announce). Nominally based on two de Maupassant stories (La femme de Paul and Le Signe) this film is Godard's portrayal of the predicament of a generation that has just turned twenty in 1965. Godard uses what has been described as "an intellectualised comic strip technique", in a series of conversation pieces in fifteen sections involving four young Parisians
