Year Zero in a divided Germany. With his father too ill to work, his soldier brother terrified or being arrested as a war criminal and his sister reduced to cadging cigarettes off occupying troops, 12 year-old Edmund scours Berlin for any work he can find. However , a meeting with his disgraced teacher, who still clings to his Nazi ideals, suggests a hideous solution to his problems. Completing the 'war trilogy' that Roberto Rossellini started with Rome, Open City (1945) and Paisa (1946), this is one of the masterpieces of neo-realism. Unflinchingly depicting the dehumanising impact of defeat on a guilt-ridden nation, this harrowing study of social disintegration is held together by an exceptional performance by Edmund Moeschke, a circus hand who had never acted before and was chosen because he resembled Rossellini's recently deceaces son, Romano, to whom the film is dedicated

Based on director Luchino Visconti's vision of a peasant uprising, this haunting film details a Sicilian fishing village's battle to rebuild their post-war society in the face of an exploitative wholesaler. Visconti's purest excursion into neorealism and a masterpiece of post-war Italian cinema, La Terra Trema features striking location photography, an obscure Sicilian dialect, and an entire cast of non-professional actors. It vividly captures the struggles of a real-life family

Visconti's remarkable study of poverty and corruption in the South centred on a Sicilian fishing village was conceived as an intransigently revolutionary drama part funded by the Communist Party. However the realities of Aci-Trezza prevailed over ideology and the film became a classic humanist work, a non-naturalistic elemental study of poverty which owed more to Flaherty (Man of Aran) and Eisenstein (Que Viva Mexico) than to Marx. There nevertheless remains a creative tension between pessimistic fatalism and the possibilities of human action. In comparison with Rocco (which was initially to be its sequel) Visconti, the aristocratic Marxist aesthete, working on location with the villages of Aci-Trezza, achieved something of a synthesis between the bourgeois naturalism of Verga and the revolutionary cultural politics of Gramsci

While not the sequel to La Terra Trema (1948) originally envisaged, Rocco (1960) is still best seen in this context. At the end of La Terra Trema members of the family leave the Sicilian fishing village, where they have no future, for work in the North. Rocco begins with a Southern immigrant family's arrival in Milan. Both films centre on the destruction of the family as the price for 'economic progress'. La Terra Trema is a more deeply unified work than Rocco drawing inspiration from a certain kind of realist novel. While also drawing on various literary sources in Rocco, Visconti had developed his own operatic style of melodrama erupting from the confines of naturalism and requiring an international cast of professional actors. In the earlier film a cast of Sicilian non-professionals improvised dialogue in dialect
