Catherine visits a deserted tenement to question the witness to an unsolved crime, and Vincent follows to protect her. The witness, a gangleader, identifies the leader of the Silks as the murderer, as the room explodes in gunfire from the rival gang. Vincent sees that the witness is still alive and when he goes back to save him he is knocked unconscious. He awakens nearly blind, chained to the pipes of the gang clubhouse. While Catherine frantically searches for help, Vincent is mercilessly tortured. Finally, his violent roars of rage and agony rupture the pipes and fill the room with scalding steam. Bloody and weakened, he escapes and as the vicious gang hunt him down, he searches for the entrance of his world below
