The hour between dog and wolf : risk-taking, gut feelings and the biology of boom and bust by John Coates( Book )

14 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 185 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this startling and unconventional book, neuroscientist and former Wall Street trader John Coates explains something we have long suspected: that we think with our body as well as our brain. This is true when we take risks at work, in sport, on the battlefield, and especially in the financial markets. Making and losing money provokes an overwhelming biological response, and this can alter the way we behave. Could this bodily turmoil lead to the kind of irrational exuberance and pessimism that so regularly destabilise the global economy?

The hour between dog and wolf : risk taking, gut feelings, and the biology of boom and bust by John Coates( )

9 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 127 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A successful Wall Street trader turned Cambridge neuroscientist reveals the biology of boom and bust and how risk taking transforms our body chemistry, driving us to extremes of euphoria and risky behavior or stress and depression. The laws of financial boom and bust, it turns out, have more than a little to do with male hormones. In a series of groundbreaking experiments, Dr. John Coates identified a feedback loop between testosterone and success that dramatically lowers the fear of risk in men-especially younger men. Significantly, the fear of risk is not reduced in women. Similarly, intense failure leads to a rise in levels of cortisol, the antitestosterone hormone, which lowers the appetite for risk across an entire spectrum of decisions. Coates had set out to prove a strong intuition from his previous career: Before he became a world-class neuroscientist, Coates ran a derivatives desk in New York. As a successful trader on Wall Street, "the hour between dog and wolf" was the moment traders transformed-they would become revved up, exuberant risk takers when flying high or tentative, risk-averse creatures when cowering from their losses. Coates understood instinctively that these dispositions were driven by body chemistry-and then he proved it. The Hour between Dog and Wolf expands on Coates' own research to offer lessons from the entire exploding new field of the biology of risk. Risk concentrates the mind and body like nothing else, altering our physiology in ways that have profound and lasting effects. What's more, biology shifts investors' risk preferences across the business cycle and can precipitate great change in the marketplace. Though Coates' research concentrates on traders, his conclusions shed light on all types of high-pressure decision making, from the sports field to the battlefield. This book leaves us with a powerful insight: handling risk in a "highly evolved" way isn't a matter of mind over body; it's a matter of mind and body working together. We all have it in us to be transformed from dog into wolf; the only question is whether we can understand the causes and the consequences

Patience, a novel by John Coates( Book )

A lightly handled story of sex, marriage and Catholicism maintains a gay innocence as Patience Gathorne-Galley wakens to her unused potentialities. Learning of her husband's mistress and very aware of ubiquitous Sin, she is very much surprised to discover that there is such a thing as love when she meets Philip who gives her her first lesson in sex. With the help of her worldly sister and her lawyer husband, Patience uses her faith's weapons to dissolve her marriage to Edward and then discovers she has been living in adultery, with Edward's first wife still alive. But there are other gambits, other obstacles before she is free to take her three little girls, marry Philip and present him with a new baby. The flying man by George Dunning( Visual )

1 edition published in 1962 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The story of this classic animated film by George Dunning, director of "Yellow submarine", is simple, almost non-existent. A man takes off his hat and coat, jumps up and, in mid-air, begins to do the breast stroke. A second man, accompanied by a dog, arrives and when the animal attacks the coat, the flying man descends, puts on his clothes and walks off. Whereupon the second man tries to emulate his feat, but fails. The characters are all nebulous, water-colour shapes without clear outlines, created by employing a technique that involves painting on glass
