In July 1991 Boris Yeltsin was swept to power on a tide of popularity and became President of Russia. The people wanted a strong leader to guide them through the transformation from Communism to democracy. Yeltsin seemed just the man for the job. But just two years later, both Russia and Yeltsin were in crisis. Alexander Korzhakov who worked as Yeltsin's bodyguard for eight years recalls that the President was so depressed he seemed to think his life was no longer worth living. His version of events point to the president even having suicidal tendencies. Yeltsin was a man who had come to power with great intentions but who could not see them through. He had become trapped in a cycle of depression, drinking and illness that jeopardised Russia's future. However, today it is Yeltsin's character and drive that Russia has to thank for making the huge leap from Communism to democracy
