Wenders turned Hawthorne's intricate analysis of guilt, penance and the human soul into a semi-Western (he had 'Johnny Guitar' in mind) about two lovers unfairly persecuted and repressed by a rigid and corrupt society. The film was actually filmed in Spain on remodelled sets previously designed for shooting Westerns. It has a feminist orientation not found in Wenders' other films. Hester becomes strong, whole and free while the socially powerful priest, Dimmesdale, is destroyed by his duplicity. This is the only Wenders' film clearly made in a classical narrative style
