In 1974 the most celebrated American R&B acts of the time came together with the most renowned musical groups in Southern Africa for a 12-hour, three-night concert held in Kinshasa, Zaire. The music festival became a reality when Hugh Masekela and Stewart Levine convinced boxing promoter Don King to combine the event with the 'Rumble in the Jungle,' the epic fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman.

Fight promoters offered him five million dollars to come to the African nation of Zaire to face a seemingly unbeatable opponent whose youth and ferocity left Ali a long shot. Then, as the world watched, Ali took center ring, pulling off a stunning upset in what many call the fight of the century -- "The Rumble in the Jungle." It's 1974, Muhammed Ali is 32 and thought by many to be past his prime. George Forman is ten years younger and the Heavyweight champion of the world. Promoter Don King wants to make a name for himself and offers both fighters five million dollars apiece to fight one another, and when they accept, King has only to come up with the money. He finds a backer in Mobutu Sese Suko, the dictator of Zaire and the "Rumble in the Jungle" is set. A musical festival, featuring the America's top black performers, like James Brown and B.B. King, is also planned.
