Manual of mental and physical tests; a book of directions compiled with special reference to the experimental study of school children in the laboratory or classroom by Guy Montrose Whipple( Book )

74 editions published between 1910 and 1973 in English and held by 784 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book examines the general purposes of mental tests, lays down rules for their conduct, and explains the methods of treating data. In this connection, the calculation of measures of general tendency, measures of variability, indexes of correlation, and other statistical constants are discussed. This second edition has undergone extensive revision and alterations in the text. The attempt has been made to eliminate a number of confusing typographical errors; a new and better system of abbreviations for titles of periodicals has been introduced; the directions for conducting the tests have been modified where ambiguity was felt; numerous tables and graphs have been added; the section upon the treatment of measures has been expanded; and several new tests have been inserted. These changes have so increased the material as to make it desirable to divide it into two parts, the first dealing with simpler, the second with more complex processes"--Pref. Intelligence : its nature and nurture by National Society for the Study of Education( Book )

26 editions published between 1939 and 1940 in English and held by 499 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This second part of the 39th National Society for the Study of Education "yearbook" contains original studies and experiments on the nature and nurturing of intelligence. The purpose of the National Society is to promote the investigation and discussion of educational questions. To this end it holds an annual meeting and publishes a series of yearbooks. This yearbook will be discussed at the St. Louis meeting of the Society to be held February 24-26, 1940. The individual studies cover a range of material on intelligence, the many aspects of intellectual development in children, the various effects of early education on intelligence, and the factors of nature, nurture, and environmental factors in intelligence. There are a few offerings on development among children with mental retardation, slow learners, as well as development among children with mothers who could be considered "feeble-minded."

The psychological methods of testing intelligence by William Stern( )

14 editions published between 1914 and 2010 in English and held by 422 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In my judgment, intelligence testing is one of the most promising fields of applied psychology, using that term in the strictest sense. For this reason I wanted to make this survey of it accessible to wider circles of readers outside the psychological profession, especially to teachers of normal and of backward children, to school administrative authorities, to school physicians, to specialists in nervous and in children's diseases, and to those engaged in child welfare work. This special edition, accordingly, has been arranged. I have treated in it three main topics: single tests, the serial method (after Binet-Simon) and the methods of correlation and estimation. I hope that it will demonstrate to the workers in these circles the great importance and fruitfulness of the psychologist's methods and at the same time show them the difficulties and the gaps in the present status of this work, and that so plainly as to prevent overhasty attempts at practical application"--Preface. "For the purposes of correcting some errors and misunderstandings and of explaining in a clear and accurate manner the theory, nature, and practical use of intelligence tests, the present Yearbook has been compiled. It is composed of two parts. In Part I the more theoretical, general, and technical aspects of mental testing are set forth in such a manner, it is hoped, that the treatment may be easily understood by those who have little expert knowledge of, or skill in, the matters here considered. Indeed, it is the aim in this part of the Yearbook, as well as in the following part, to set forth the facts in regard to mental testing in as simple and direct a way as possible, so that all who are interested in the subject may get a real insight into the theory and the uses of mental testing. Part I attempts to show just what is to be understood by the term "general intelligence," to indicate how this may be measured and to show the steps by which mental tests have grown up and some of their most essential characteristics. Further, the attempt is made to acquaint the teacher and administrator with the correct methods of studying and evaluating the results of mental testing. A descriptive bibliography is added which furnishes information in regard to the various group tests of intelligence now available. A brief chapter is added on the importance of measurement in education generally. Part II takes up in some detail the administrative uses of intelligence tests in various grades of instruction, beginning with the primary grades and ending with the college and university. In the discussions in this part of the book the purpose is to set forth in some detail the procedure and results of mental testing as far as they relate to matters of instruction and administration"--Introduction. "The Yearbook on Nature and Nurture has grown out of a suggestion made by Dr. L. M. Terman in December, 1923, that the Society might profitably initiate some research on the limitations of educability, might help to answer the question whether educational effort can or can not make bright children out of dull ones. It has been impossible in this volume to preserve the relatively simple style of presentation that has characterized many of our yearbooks which were designed to be directly helpful to the classroom teacher. It has been necessary in the present series of studies to employ intricate methods of approach and complex statistical methods of treatment. That could not be avoided, but the committee has sought to assist the lay reader by prefacing each chapter with a brief orientation, explaining the purpose, method, and outcome of the study in question and its relation to the general problem of the Yearbook. Those who think of the nature-nurture issue as a fruitful field for rhetorical debate will be disappointed in the pages that follow. No one has tried to be controversial"--Preface.
