Eperdu, Qays s'obstine et clame plus haut et plus fort sa passion pour Layla prisonnière de son propre clan. Les obstacles peu à peu, font perdre la raison à Qays : il devient Majnûn "le fou" ... Dès lors, Majnûn disparaît dans le désert et ne réapparaît que pour rôder autour du campement de Layla. Le père de celle-ci le tolère à présent, ne craignant plus pour sa fille un pauvre garçon qui a perdu la raison. Layla, qui porte le nom de la nuit, vit dans un isolement contraint et partage les souffrances de Majnûn et son combat pour leur impossible amour. Le père de Majnûn sort du silence dans lequel il s'est enfermé depuis le scandale provoqué par son fils. Il fait plusieurs tentatives de réconciliation avec le père de Layla, mais un autre incident oppose de nouveau les deux hommes et sépare à jamais Layla de Majnûn. Layla est mariée de force. Majnûn le découvre et plonge dans une longue hébétude. Il refuse de se nourrir, se brûle les mains et décide de ne plus quitter l'endroit où il a assisté au départ du palanquin emportant Layla vers son mari étranger. Un matin, Majnûn quitte son emplacement pour disparaître définitivement dans le désert. Seul Amina, sa nourrice, le retrouve et devient son unique lien avec le monde des hommes. Désormais, Majnûn ne vit qu'avec l'image de Layla, toujours présente dans son nouveau royaume : "En me voyant, dit-il, on me dit fou, eh bien, oui, il existe en moi une folie et c'est Layla!".
