Physician and healthcare administrator Dr. David Satcher was born on March 2, 1941, in Anniston, Alabama. Satcher graduated from Morehouse College in 1963. In 1970, Satcher received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees in cytogenetics from Case Western Reserve University, and served as director of the King-Drew Sickle Cell Research Center at University of California at Los Angeles from 1973 to 1979. Satcher held various faculty positions at Morehouse College School of Medicine before becoming president of Meharry Medical College in 1982. Satcher served as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 1993 to 1998, when he became Surgeon General and Assistant Secretary for Health and Human Services, serving until 2002. Satcher returned to Morehouse College School of Medicine to assume the position of director of the National Center for Primary Care. Satcher was the recipient of eighteen honorary degrees and numerous distinguished honors
