L'unico modo per tornare umano è quello di essere baciato da una principessa. La principessa di New Orleans è Tiana, la quale però è abbastanza riluttante a baciare anfibi. Quando alla fine si decide, anche lei viene tramutata in rana. In queste sembianze sono costretti a vivere nella palude, dove però incontreranno qualche simpatico personaggio, come l'alligatore Louis che suona la tromba (ha imparato seguendo le imbarcazioni che attraversano il fiume), e la lucciola Ray.
