In un collegio femminile - agli albori del Risorgimento - Mariella e Caterinetta, nobile la prima e figlia di signorotti la seconda, provocano una serie di incidenti per la innata astiosità esistente tra le loro famiglie. Un giorno nei pressi del collegio avviene uno scontro tra gendarmi e garibaldini e, uno di questi, ferito, penetra nel giardino per sfuggire agli inseguitori. Caterinetta lo scopre e avverte il vecchio giardiniere fervente patriota che lo ospita nella propria capanna. Ma la ferita è piuttosto grave e ha bisogno di essere curata e Caterinetta chiede aiuto a Mariella, pratica di medicature, e il caso vuole che il garibaldino sia il suo segreto fidanzato che da tempo non vedeva. Frattanto però i gendarmi ricercano attivamente il fuggiasco e penetrano nel collegio portando lo scompiglio tra le ignare suore e le giovani collegiali. Assediati nella capanna il garibaldino, il giardiniere e le due ragazze si difendono a oltranza e prima di arrendersi Caterinetta riesce a fuggire a cavallo e chiedere aiuto all'accampamento dei garibaldini. Il ferito è posto in salvo e le due ragazze ormai riconciliate diverranno le migliori amiche
