Wenn Petersen auf den patriotischen Putz haut, ist das professionell: spannende Action, raffinierte Technik, viel Gefühl. Daß hier, im Gegensatz zu Petersens wunderbarem Film "In the Line of Fire" mit Clint Eastwood als Kennedy-Bodyguard, (Selbst)Ironie und Erotik fehlen, ist schade. Daß nun deutsche Regisseure wie Roland Emmerich ("Independence Day") und Petersen das in US-Filmen sarkastisch-angeschlagene Präsidenten-Image aufbessern: ein lustiges Phänomen. (...) (Angie Dullinger, AZ, 23.10.97) Russische Terroristen entführen Air Force One, die Präsidentenmaschine der Vereinigten Staaten, um einen in Moskau gefangengehaltenen General freizupressen. Formal zwischen Politthriller und Vietnamfilm angesiedelt entkommt Wolfgang Petersens neuester Film nicht dem grundlegenden Dilemma, trotz aller technischer Möglichkeiten über ein Symbol nationaler Identität wie die "AF 1" nicht anders als mythisch-legendenhaft erzählen zu können.
