Learning for tomorrow's world : first results from PISA 2003 by Programme for International Student Assessment( Book )

14 editions published between 2003 and 2005 in English and Spanish and held by 224 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report presents the first internationally comparable results to OECD's 2003 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) survey of the educational performance of 15-year-olds in reading, mathematics, and science in 25 OECD countries. This year, the concentration was on mathematics. Beyond the examination of the relative standing of countries in mathematics, science and reading, the report also looks at a wider range of educational outcomes that include students motivation to learn, their beliefs about themselves, and their learning strategies. Furthermore, it examines how performance varies between the genders and between socio-economic groups, and it provides insights into some of the factors that influence the development of knowledge and skills at home and at school, how these factors interact and what the implications are for policy development. Most importantly, the report sheds light on countries that succeed in achieving high performance standards while, at the same time, providing an equitable distribution of learning opportunities. The report presents a wealth of indicators showing how countries compare in various measures of educational performance and factors that affect that performance.--Publisher summary

Student engagement at school : a sense of belonging and participation : results from PISA 2000 by Jon Douglas Willms( Book )

13 editions published in 2003 in English and French and held by 160 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How widespread is student disaffection with school in different education systems? What policies and practices are most effective in fostering students' sense of belonging and participation in school? These questions are of great concern to educators in many countries, not only because of the interrelationship between student engagement at school and learning outcomes, but also because student engagement represents a valued outcome in itself. The OECD PISA provides not only information on students' literacy skills, but also on their attitudes and values, their social backgrounds, and on important features of the schools they attend

12 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in English and held by 144 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

All stakeholders - parents, students, those who teach and run education systems as well as the general public - need to be informed on how well their education systems prepare students for life. Knowledge and skills in school subjects such as languages, mathematics and science are an essential foundation for this but a much wider range of competencies is needed for students to be well prepared for the future. Problem-solving skills, i.e. the capacity of students to understand problems situated in novel and cross-curricular settings, to identify relevant information or constraints, to represent possible alternatives or solution paths, to develop solution strategies, and to solve problems and communicate the solutions, are an example of this wider range of competencies. The 2003 assessment of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's (OECD) Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) included an assessment of students' problem-solving skills, providing for the first time a direct assessment of life competencies that apply across different areas of the school curriculum

Drawing on data from the OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), this publication examines: whether access to computers for students is equitable across countries and student groups, how students use ICT and what their attitudes are towards ICT, the relationship between students' access to and use of ICT and their performance in PISA 2003, and the implications for educational policy.--Publisher summary
