Knowledge and skills for life : first results from the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2000 by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development( Book )

18 editions published between 1994 and 2001 in English and held by 373 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Knowledge and Skills for Life assesses how far students near the end of compulsory education (15-year-olds) have acquired some of the knowledge and skills that are essential for full participation in society. It presents evidence on student performance in reading, mathematical and scientific literacy, reveals factors that influence the development of these skills at home and at school, and examines what the implications are for policy development. The report shows considerable variation in levels of knowledge and skills between students, schools and countries. The extent to which the socio-economic background of students and schools affects student performance varies. Some countries have managed to mitigate the influence of social background and some have done that while achieving a high overall mean performance. A Winner of the 2001 Awards for Notable Government Documents conferred by the American Library Association/Library Journal
Learning for tomorrow's world : first results from PISA 2003 by Programme for International Student Assessment( Book )

16 editions published between 2003 and 2005 in English and Spanish and held by 362 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report presents the first internationally comparable results to OECD's 2003 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) survey of the educational performance of 15-year-olds in reading, mathematics, and science in 25 OECD countries. This year, the concentration was on mathematics. Beyond the examination of the relative standing of countries in mathematics, science and reading, the report also looks at a wider range of educational outcomes that include students motivation to learn, their beliefs about themselves, and their learning strategies. Furthermore, it examines how performance varies between the genders and between socio-economic groups, and it provides insights into some of the factors that influence the development of knowledge and skills at home and at school, how these factors interact and what the implications are for policy development. Most importantly, the report sheds light on countries that succeed in achieving high performance standards while, at the same time, providing an equitable distribution of learning opportunities. The report presents a wealth of indicators showing how countries compare in various measures of educational performance and factors that affect that performance.--Publisher summary

Student engagement at school : a sense of belonging and participation : results from PISA 2000 by Jon Douglas Willms( )

15 editions published in 2003 in English and French and held by 344 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How widespread is student disaffection with school in different education systems? What policies and practices are most effective in fostering students' sense of belonging and participation in school? These questions are of great concern to educators in many countries, not only because of the interrelationship between student engagement at school and learning outcomes, but also because student engagement represents a valued outcome in itself. The OECD PISA provides not only information on students' literacy skills, but also on their attitudes and values, their social backgrounds, and on important features of the schools they attend

12 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in English and held by 301 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has profound implications for education, both because it can facilitate new forms of learning and because it has become important for young people to master ICT in preparation for adult life. But how extensive is access to ICT in schools and informal settings and how is it used by students? Drawing on data from the OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), this publication examines: whether access to computers for students is equitable across countries and student groups, how students use ICT and what their attitudes are towards ICT, the relationship between students' access to and use of ICT and their performance in PISA 2003, and the implications for educational policy.--Publisher summary

Learners for life : student approaches to learning : results from pisa 2000 by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development( Book )

17 editions published in 2003 in English and French and held by 283 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What are students like as learners as they near the end of compulsory education? The answer matters greatly, not only because those with stronger approaches to learning get better results at school but also because young adults who are able to set learning goals and manage their own learning are much more likely to take up further study and become lifelong learners. This report analyses the results, focusing on students' motivation, self-beliefs and use of various learning strategies. In particular, it looks at those characteristics that together make it more likely that a student will become
Are the new millennium learners making the grade? : technology use and educational performance in PISA by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development( Book )

4 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 270 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Using data from PISA 2006, this book analyzes to what extent investments in technology enhance educational outcomes. One of the most striking findings of this study is that the digital divide in education goes beyond the issue of access to technology. A new second form of digital divide has been identified: the one existing between those who have the right competencies to benefit from computer use, and those who do not. These competencies and skills are closely linked to the economic, cultural and social capital of the student. This finding has important implications for policy and practice. Governments should make an effort to clearly convey the message that computer use matters for the education of young people and do their best to engage teachers and schools in raising the frequency of computer use to a level that becomes relevant. If schools and teachers are really committed to the development of 21st century competencies, such an increase will happen naturally. And only in these circumstances will clear correlations between technology use and educational performance emerge
