In the Nineties, the Korean contemporary dance was confronted with the world of the contemporary dance in Europe. The object of our study is to approach the identity of this contemporary dance through the French scenes, those of the "Rencontres chorégraphiques internationales de Seine Saint-Denis" and those of "Lyon Dance Biennial". The Korean choreographers currently try out an artistic form integrating personal creativity and Orient- Occident duality. The Korean contemporary artists join together Orient and Occident, tradition and creation, individual and universal. What is a "Koreanized essence" in a choreographic art at the time of today globalization? We questioned ourselves about the existence of a "Korean essence", which should be identified in Korean choreographies, from the very beginning of our work. It seemed important to us to find an identity proper to the Korean dance at the time of globalization. We can define the "Koreanization" as the effort of assimilation of the tradition in the contemporary dance and the "De-Koreanization" as the fusion between identity of oneself and the particular body language, part of recognition of the body of the contemporary dance in all its forms. It is research tasks on the spirit and the Korean identity; that corresponds to an effort towards the harmonization between Korea of today and Korea of yesterday or rather between the conscience of ethnic membership and the universality

This dissertation starts out with a case study of the Sciences and Theatre Department of the National Institute of Applied Sciences in Lyon, which offers volunteer students artistic classes within their scientific training: sociology can first help define the features of this unique group. It then attempts to discover the individual, relational, social and cognitive bridges between the students' drama courses, their professional vistas and their personal achievements. Theatre anthropology provides tools for describing the work of the actors in training, while constructivist epistemology lays the basis of science of engineering. Working from both perspectives, one can contend that the two approaches might share common goals, in the fields of design, invention and creation; this leads one to put forth the concept of 'theatrical engineering', a process that conceives and creates live performances, in ways similar to the methods used by engineers for designing their artifacts

This thesis responds to a question which has until now remained little addressed by theoricians and commentators about the Odin Teatret's activities: How has the theoretical apparatus of Eugenio Barba produced a mythology and misunderstandings when it comes to the reception of his performances and the effective praxis of his theater? The source material for this research includes, among other things, on-site field work at the Odin Teatret between 2002 and 2006, interviews carried out with actors and actresses as well as historical witnesses to the activities of Odin Teatret. This thesis addresses a contemporary subject concerning living persons: these sources and the research methods engaged are part of theme of study itself. In opposition to monolithic theories, this thesis brings to light and into the present, the contradictory and dynamic representations of the Odin Teatret, an object and a subject of study which reposes on the complementarity of opposites. The variances inherent in the Odin Teatret performances, the functionality of the group, and the theory and very person of Eugenio Barba provide the raw material for this research. The thesis is divided into four parts. 1. La méthode, c'est le chemin une fois qu'on l'a parcouru: Study of the disjuncture in the reception of the texts and performances produced by Eugenio Barba. 2. A history of the interrelationship between theory and practice in Eugenio Barba's directing. 3. Theatre Anthropology, or the theoretical edifice of Odin Teatret. The constitution of Theatre Anthropology: an examination of the fortuitous circumstances of its creation, the history of its theorist, and the application of this theory and method in actor training. 4. Fieldwork / interviews. Description / analysis of the topography of Odin Teatret and moments of everyday life at the theater during the present decade. An introduction to the interviews with actors and actresses of Odin Teatret. Interviews: I am particularly interested in three actresses of the theater who have modified the original project of Eugenio Barba to construct a theater-laboratory based on the masculine model of Jerzy Grotowski
