Bereits der Titel und die literarischen Namen, die Rebecca Wells den Hauptfiguren ihres Bestsellers, den Damen aus Louisiana, verpasst hat, lassen keine Unklarheiten aufkommen. Zunächst gibt es da Sidda (Sandra Bullock), eine erfolgreiche Theaterautorin, die nach einer traumatischen Kindheit noch immer mit ihrer manipulativen Mutter Vivi (Ellen Burstyn) zu kämpfen hat. Dazu kommen die langjährigen Freundinnen Teensy (Fionnula Flanagan), Necie (Shirley Knight) und Caro (überragend: Maggie Smith), die sich allesamt seit ihrer Kindheit kennen, in Vivis geheimem Bündnis der Ya-Ya-Schwestern vereint sind und alles daransetzen, die Kluft zwischen Sidda und ihrer Mutter zu schließen. Drehbuchautorin und Erstlingsregisseurin Callie Khouri (sie schrieb auch das Buch zu Thelma & Louise) bedient sich einer ambitionierten Flashback-Struktur (Ashley Judd verkörpert im übrigen die jüngere Vivi), die als Nährboden für diese Mutter-Tochter-Wiedervereinigung dient. Der Humor, und davon gibt es jede Menge, dient nicht nur der Abschwächung der dramatischen Aspekte des Films, sondern inspiriert auch Sandra Bullock zu ihrer besten Leistung seit Jahren. Nur ausgesprochene Fans der Autorin Rebecca Wells mögen der Umsetzung wegen ein leichtes Bedauern verspüren, für alle anderen ist Die Göttlichen Geheimnisse der Ya-Ya-Schwestern ganz sicher einen Blick wert. --Jeff Shannon
