The German troops are entering the Meuse. The alert has been given. The French soldier calmly awaits the shock. All the villages have been evacuated; wives have been torn apart from their husbands, who stay to defend the land the old farmer won't abandon. The German offensive takes place on February 21st, 1916. Following intense bombing from 7:15 am to 5 pm, flocks of German soldiers dash through the bois des Caures. In order to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the end of World War I, Léon Poirier recreated the battle of Verdun and inscribed in history the lives of symbolic characters from both sides of the front. Verdun, looking at history was edited in three distinct parts and is an epic film of great emotional strength dedicated to all the martyrs of the ugliest human passion that is war

Le voyage imaginaire by Ren Clair( Visual )

1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A rather bizarre film that relates the complicated relationship between three bank clerks and their boss for the typist girl that works in the same office. Clair creates a dream world which plunges this group of people into a series of surrealistic and fantasy adventures that will delight and entertain. There are lady fortunetellers, fairies, classic story characters and even modern heroes such as "Charlot" not to mention the "Notre Dame" roofs and the museum "Grévin". That mixed dream world benefits from using all the special effects known at that time combined with simple backgrounds that are perfect for the formal aspect of the story. It all creates an unreal atmosphere, incredible and dumbfounding at times. Clair directed a very special film that is thought-provoking and fascinating"--Container

Cyrano de Bergerac by Augusto Genina( Visual )

1 edition published in 2000 in French and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The most beloved of all love stories! Edmond Rostand's play "Cyrano de Bergerac" was a triumph from the moment of its premiere on December 28, 1897. It has become the most popular play of the modern French theater, and Cyrano, despite an ugly visage dominated by an enormous nose, has become a world-beloved symbol of generosity, magnanimity of spirit and beauty of soul. In adapting "Cyrano de Bergerac" to the silent cinema, director Augusto Genina and scenarist Mario Camerini retained the beloved poetic language of Rostand's original work. The grandeur of costume, setting and action is captured not only in impressive staging and sensitive performances but also through the filmmakers' bold decision to present almost the entire work in the highly stylized and beautiful Pathe Stencil Color process. Three years were devoted to the by-hand coloring of "Cyrano de Bergerac," so that this 1922 film was not fully released until the Fall of 1925!
