Liberia : an Uncivil War by Jonathan Stack( Visual )

7 editions published between 2005 and 2008 in English and held by 457 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In Liberia, the summer of 2003 was pure insanity: two armies are in the final battle of a decade-long civil war, holding the capital under siege while thousands die from mortar shells launched from afar. As the soldiers, mostly teenagers, fight a bloody urban battle, the nation prays that American forces show up to put an end to the violence. Liberia, a country founded by freed American slaves, has a long intertwined history with America. While the rebel army, the LURD, attempts to overthrow the Liberian government, President Charles Taylor and his army maintain a strong grip on the city."

The Farm : Angola USA by Liz Garbus( Visual )

5 editions published between 1998 and 2014 in English and held by 139 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The film "provides an intimate look inside the lives of six inmates at the notorious maximum security Louisiana State Penitentiary. The filmamakers spent a year filming at what was widely known as "America's Bloodiest Prison," called Angola after the home of the slaves that once worked its fields, and still known as "The Farm"--Its fertile soil enriched by the surrounding Mississippi River that regularly floods the prison. These are the stories of men sentenced to life--or death--behind bars, some fighting the system to prove their innocence, others paying the price to society for the harm their crimes have caused. But the inmates are sustained by a powerful and innately human longing for redemption that allows them to hold onto hope that their lives will have meaning and that they can achieve forgiveness"--Container

Seventy-five percent of these women are mothers and one fourth are serving sentences of fifteen years or more. The prison compound has a surreal quality; there are no searchlight-capped towers or barbed wire fences. Filmmaker Khadivi delivers a portrait of life in this deceptively peaceful atmosphere which is filled with stories of life on the streets, abuse, freedom, childbirth and motherhood. Six women, a grandmother, a young high school student, a pregnant woman, a recovering heroin addict, a prison guard, and the only woman on death row, share their frustrations and hopes
