The educator's guide to preventing and solving discipline problems by Mark Boynton( )

8 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 471 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Annotation. What can you do to keep students from fighting in the hallways and acting out in class? When they break the rules, what disciplinary actions can you take to help students behave themselves in the future? You'll find the answers to these questions and many more in this comprehensive, research-based guide to developing a schoolwide discipline system. Preventing discipline problems usually requires less energy than coping with problems after they occur, and a day without discipline problems is certainly more enjoyable for teachers and students alike! With this in mind, Mark and Christine Boynton present a wide variety of prevention strategies that any teacher can use, including advice about their relative appropriateness in different settings and circumstances. Of course, even the most successful preventive measures sometimes can t stop a student from disrupting a lesson or picking on classmates. In those situations, it is crucial to know which interventions are effective and which are counterproductive. This book will help you learn the most appropriate reactions to (and consequences for) student misbehavior, as well as specific strategies for handling oppositional defiant disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and anger management issues in students. You'll also find ideas for exploring your school's philosophical beliefs concerning discipline, promoting positive teacher-student relations, and establishing clearly defined parameters of acceptable classroom behavior. Whether you're a K 12 teacher or a school principal, The Educator s Guide to Preventing and Solving Discipline Problems will change the way you approach discipline in your school for the better! Mark and Christine Boynton, both former teachers and principals, are currently educational consultants specializing in discipline issues. They live in Gig Harbor, Washington

Unhappy valley : conflict in Kenya & Africa by Bruce Berman( )

1 edition published in 1992 in English and held by 34 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This long-awaited book is a considerable revision in the understanding of the history of colonial Kenya and, more widely, colonialism in Africa. There is a substantial amount of new work and this is interlocked with shared areas of concern which the authors have been exploring since 1976." "The authors investigate major themes. These include the conquest origins and subsequent development of the colonial state, the contradictory social forces that articulated African societies to European capitalism, and the creation of new political communities and changing meanings of ethnicity in Africa, in the context of social differentiation and class formation. There is substantial new work on the problems of Mau Mau and of wealth, poverty and civic virtue in Kikuyu political thought." "The authors make a fresh contribution to a deeper historical understanding of the development of contemporary Kenyan society and, in particular, of the British and Kikuyu origins of Mau Mau and the emergency of the 1950s." "They also highlight some of the shortcomings of ideas about development, explore the limitations of narrowly structuralist Marxist theory of the state, and reflect on the role of history in the future of Africa." "Book One on State and Class will be used by students of African history as well as of colonial Kenya; it is also concerned with the theory of history and of political science. Book jacket."--Jacket

Taxing ourselves : a citizen's guide to the debate over taxes by Joel Slemrod( Book )

5 editions published between 1996 and 2008 in English and held by 29 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Who should pay taxes, how should they be collected, and how do they affect the economy? Should the income tax be tinkered with, replaced with a flat tax, or left alone? Cutting through the academic jargon and self-serving Washington-speak, Joel Slemrod and Jon Bakija bring together all of the data, analytical insight, and related material bearing on tax reform to explore the fundamental questions and choices inherent in tax policy making. Taxing Ourselves begins with a concise overview of the U.S. tax system as it exists today, offering historical and international perspectives on taxation. It examines the criteria that should serve as guides for tax policy - fairness, the promotion of economic prosperity, and simplicity - and explores the controversies and difficulties related to each one. Crucial questions about how the burden of our tax system is actually distributed and the economic effects of taxation are addressed. Slemrod and Bakija review the key elements of fundamental tax reform proposals, including a single rate, a clean base, and a consumption base. Finally they take a detailed look at the major alternatives for tax reform, providing concise guidelines that will make clear the choices involved in tax policy

A biographical dictionary of actors, actresses, musicians, dancers, managers & other stage personnel in London, 1660-1800 by Philip H Highfill( Book )

7 editions published between 1973 and 1991 in English and held by 28 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

To be completed in 12 volumes, this monumental work here begins publication with the first two volumes--Abaco to Bertie and Bertin to Byzard. When completed, it is expected that the biographical dictionary will include information on more than 8,500 individuals. Hundreds of printed sources have been searched for this project, and dozens of repositories combed, and the names of personnel listed have been filtered through parish registers whenever possible. From published and unpublished sources, from wills, archives of professional societies and guilds, from records of colleges, universities, and clubs, and from the contributions of selfless scholars, the authors have here assembled material which illuminates theatrical and musical activity in London in the 1660-1800 period. The information here amassed will doubtless be augmented by other specialists in Restoration and eighteenth-century theatre and drama, but it is not likely that the number of persons now known surely or conjectured finally to have been connected with theatrical enterprise in this period will ever be increased considerably. Certainly, the contributions made here add immeasurably to existing knowledge, and in a number of instances correct standard histories or reference works. The accompanying illustrations, estimated to be some 1,400 likenesses--at least one picture of each subject for whom a portrait exists--may prove to be a useful feature of the Work. The authors have gone beyond embellishment of the text, and have attempted to list all original portraits any knowledge of which is now recoverable, and have tried to ascertain the present location of portraits in every medium -- Provided by the publisher
