Hopper drawing by Carter E Foster( Book )

9 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 561 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Edward Hopper (1882-1967) is recognized as one of the most well-known American artists of the 20th century. His distinctive style, combining subtle observations of the world with his imagination, has not only influenced other artists but also photographers, filmmakers, and popular culture. Although Hopper is primarily known for his oil paintings, including such iconic works as Nighthawks (1942) and Early Sunday Morning (1930), this important publication is the first comprehensive exploration of his drawings and working methods. In 1967, Hopper's widow, Josephine Nivison Hopper, bequeathed her husband's artistic estate to the Whitney Museum of American Art, including a fascinating collection of more than 2,500 drawings spanning his entire career. This group of works has never been the subject of in-depth study and many have never been reproduced before. Hopper kept these drawings for personal reference as he revisited various themes throughout his career. Carter E. Foster examines how Hopper used his drawings to develop his paintings, arguing that the artist's work can only be fully understood after careful study of these preparatory sketches. Foster also argues that Hopper was, in many ways, a traditional draftsman who methodically developed schematic ideas into detailed studies to refine content. However, the steps toward this refinement are unique to Hopper and reveal how he turned the mundane into poetic images with universal appeal."--Publisher's website

Ellsworth Kelly : black & white by Ellsworth Kelly( Book )

1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 145 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The paintings of Ellsworth Kelly (born 1923) are famous for their hard edges, minimalist abstraction and above all, their bright, vibrant colors. Less known are the black-and-white drawings, collages and paintings that preceded or accompanied many of them, despite the fact that they make up roughly 20 percent of his total output. Ellsworth Kelly: Black & White and the exhibition it accompanies bring together the artist's color-free work for the first time, and offer a fresh take on his long career, emphasizing his use of shape, contrast, texture and his incorporation of such everyday objects as a broken windowpane, a handrail shadow or the leaf of a plant into his abstraction. This catalogue makes clear that the scale of contrast between black and white was key to Kelly's artistic self-discovery and subsequent development, and is crucial to any proper understanding of his oeuvre
Pollock and the Irascibles : the New York school( Book )

6 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 130 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Through the paintings of these 18 artists, guided by the charismatic Pollock and referred to as "The Irascibles", after a famous protest they staged against the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, this is a complete view of an essential artistic style that reinterpreted the canvas as a space for individual freedom of thought and action. It was both the style of the New York School and a unique phenomenon, which characterised post-war America and that with overwhelming force, influenced Modern Art across the world. The book is the exhibition's catalogue, which includes more than 49 masterpieces from the Whitney Museum in New York among which Pollock's Number 27, Mahoning by Franz Kline (1956), Door to the River by Willem de Kooning (1960) and Untitled (Blue, Yellow, Green on Red) (1954) by Mark Rothko, alongside works by artists who may be less famous, but that represent their mature periods and, more generally speaking, their time
Peggy Preheim by Peggy Preheim( Book )

A fine example of art by John Lurie( Book )

2 editions published between 2007 and 2008 in English and held by 108 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A modern-day shaman, Lurie leads us on a vision quest through the annals of our collective history, and on to a broader world. Alternatively exposing or addressing the larger, enduring myths of our culture through sketches of seemingly lost childhood reveries, this first compilation of ex-downtown indie art, film, and music god John Lurie's paintings presents his would-be musings in a new, interpretive storytelling--haunting, poignant, or puerile as the outcome may ultimately be. The paintings are passages from the semiotics of his own mind: the enduring stories and images are seized upon then captured to communicate Lurie's cryptic symbolism. The visions are of a perverse adult playground, peopled not by men and women in conventional adult roles or scenarios--at the office, home, or on vacation--but rather animals in new contexts, a reversal of the personification found in stuffed animals and bedtime stories. The titles or incorporated language and text are too simple for revelation, even too brief for a Lurie brand of dreamscape Americana, and function as a complicating punch. He broaches necessary questions in perhaps the only way we can access them--by the alarming surprise of his simplicity, and the non sequiturs in association with his symbolism."--Publisher's website
June Leaf : thought is infinite by June Leaf( Book )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 100 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

June Leaf's body of work - one built over nearly seven decades - belongs within a long tradition of visionary figures, from William Blake and Francisco Goya to James Ensor and Odilon Redon. Like these innovative predecessors, and fusing elements of both Expressionism and Surrealism, Leaf creates representational imagery with an intense subjectivity and personal symbolist vision. Leaf's fundamental interest in metamorphosis and states of becoming as subjects is paralleled in her working process. As imaginary as the artist's world is, her practice is deeply corporeal, materially rich, and firmly rooted the in physicality of the objects and mediums she uses. Leaf tends to work daily, driven by instinct and intuition. She sometimes invents new themes and motifs, but these often arise organically out of older ones, and the array of subjects she?s developed over the years remain close and ready for revisiting or adapting

After years of making large charcoal drawings, James Drake (born 1946) found himself making drawings that were predominately white and airy, from which he extracted images using an exacto knife. The red charcoal drawings also collected here were made in response to the white cut out drawings. Callum Innes : I'll close my eyes by Fiona Bradley( Book )

3 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 33 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
