The Bloemaert effect : colour and composition in the Golden Age by Liesbeth M Helmus( Book )

10 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 134 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Celebrating the father of the Utrecht School, this record delves into the life of the extraordinary Dutch painter Abraham Bloemaert. A concise biography illustrates how he formed and experienced at least three important styles of art in his time: mannerism, Caravaggism, and classicism, producing works in nearly all possible genres. A presentation of this obscure artist's accomplishments in a fantastic exhibition, this work demonstrates why Bloemaert had such a wide influence on painting in the northern Netherlands of the 17th century. Exploring his role as a teacher in addition to his exceptional talent for drawing, this book also examines the Utrecht specialty of painting cycles as well as specific pieces by Bloemaert, such as his altarpieces, religious and mythological works, genre scenes, landscapes, and still lifes."--Publisher's website

6 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 63 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Centraal Museum of Utrecht is the oldest Dutch city-museum. A big part of the collection of paintings dates from before 1600 and is in the museum's pocession since 1838, it's year of foundation. Some of these paintings were donated, others were taken, from churches and cloisters in Utrecht and its surroundings during the iconoclasm of 1566. The museum expanded it's collection through grants, loans and purchases. At the moment the museum has the biggest, and most important, collection of paintings from Utrecht in the world. The work of Jan van Scorel forms the most important cornerstone of the collection. In this richly illustrated catalogue all paintings are treated in its original historical context. Schilderen in opdracht : Noord-Nederlandse contracten voor altaarstukken, 1485-1570 by Liesbeth M Helmus( Book )

7 editions published in 2010 in Dutch and held by 57 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Although the relationship between patrons and painters has attracted the interest of many art historians over recent decades, "Painting on commission" is the first study of surviving contracts in the Northern regions. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, altarpieces were among the most prestigious commissions. Because of the large sums of money these assignments involved, it was of great importance that proper agreements were made, and that these were consolidated in written documents. The written contract is thus the most important source underlying the genesis of the painted altarpiece. The study addresses whether altarpieces can justifiably be seen as a distinct functional category, and how many altarpieces are likely to have been created. It examines what an artist's contract consisted of, and in which ways it was comparable with other contracts. The contracts for the painted altarpieces in the northern Netherlands are examined in depth
Der Bloemaert-Effekt : Farbe im Goldenen Zeitalter ; [anlässlich der gleichnamigen Ausstellung, Centraal Museum, Utrecht, 11. November 2011-5. Februar 2012, Staatliches Museum Schwerin, 24. Februar - 28. Mai 2012] by Liesbeth M Helmus( Book )
