Pierre Matisse and his artists by William Griswold( Book )

6 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 298 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Pierre Matisse arrived in New York shortly before Christmas 1924 determined to make his mark. At that time, the New York art world was in its formative stages, entirely different from what it was to become by the close of the twentieth century. He was to play a significant role in its establishment. In 1925, the time of the first exhibition, which featured lithographs and drawings by his father, Henri Matisse, there were few galleries and no museums exhibiting contemporary art." "In October 1931 the Pierre Matisse Gallery opened its doors in the Fuller Building on Fifty-seventh Street, just around the corner from the provisional headquarters of the recently instituted Museum of Modern Art. In addition to shows featuring works by such established artists as Giorgio de Chirico, Andre Derain, Pablo Picasso, Georges Rouault, and, of course, the elder Matisse, numerous exhibitions at the Pierre Matisse Gallery were focused around the works of younger, less-known figures, including Joan Miro, Balthus, Alberto Giacometti, and Jean Dubuffet. Pierre Matisse not only played a major role in introducing American audiences to the works of Marc Chagall, Yves Tanguy, Roberto Matta, Wifredo Lam, Reg Butler, Raymond Mason, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Francois Rouan, Zao Wou-ki, Manolo Millares, Manuel Rivera, and Antonio Saura but also fostered their critical and popular appreciation. American artists whose work he championed included Alexander Calder, Theodor Roszak, Sam Francis, and Loren MacIver." "By the time of his death in 1989, Pierre Matisse had been instrumental in the creation of a community that encompassed not only the leading artists of the twentieth century but also an impressive roster of distinguished collectors and institutions. The degree to which he enriched the artistic climate of his adopted country cannot be overestimated. This publication documents many of the outstanding works exhibited at the Pierre Matisse Gallery and - drawing upon the Pierre Matisse Gallery Archives, given to the Morgan Library in 1997 - chronicles, through correspondence, ephemera, and photographs, the history of one of the most significant venues of twentieth-century art."--Jacket

Treasures from the Nationalmuseum of Sweden : the collections of Count Tessin by Colin B Bailey( Book )

5 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 81 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Nationalmuseum, Sweden's largest and most distinguished art institution, is partnering with the Morgan to bring more than seventy-five masterpieces from its collections to New York for a rare visit. The show includes work by artists such as Albrecht Dürer, Raphael, Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt van Rijn, Antoine Watteau, and François Boucher. The core holdings of the Nationalmuseum were assembled by Count Carl Gustaf Tessin (1696-1770), a diplomat and one of the great art collectors of his day. On assignment in Paris from 1739, Tessin came into contact with the leading artists of the time and commissioned many works from them. He was also among the most active buyers at major sales of old master paintings and drawings. By the time he left Paris in 1742, he had amassed a truly impressive collection

Collecting Enlightenment : Carl Gustaf Tessin and the making of national collections( Book )

1 edition published in 2017 in English and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Count Carl Gustaf Tessin (1695-1770) the Swedish diplomat and politician, was one of Sweden's greatest art collectors. During his time as ambassador in Paris, from 1739 to 1742, he purchased and commissioned a great amount of art. Today, after more than 260 years, Tessin's art collection continues to fascinate, as he personified ideals of knowledge, taste and refinement. This reflected the new role of the arts during the Enlightenment and paved the way for the museum institution.0Many of Tessin's collected objects make up the foundation of the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and constitute the only private collection of French art from the Ancient Regime to survive intact, including original frames and correspondence with leading artists, dealers and connoisseurs in 18th century Europe.0This volume contains a number of essays by international experts and scholars and aims to shed light on the close relationship between the art collection practice and Enlightenment ideas regarding science, knowledge and society which continues to be essential to all museums worldwide. They were first presented at a research colloquium at INHA in Paris in January 2017 arranged by Axel and MargaretAx:sonJohnson Foundation together with the Louvre Museum

From the foreword by Morgan Library director Colin B. Bailey:0"Drawings have long been objects that bring like-minded people together: to discuss, exchange, buy, sell, or simply to share in their appreciation. It is no surprise, then, that this volume of essays devoted to the collecting of drawings emerges from the efforts of the Morgan's Drawing Institute, which aims to create a community of scholars, students, and art lovers working to advance knowledge in the field."
