Damage control : art and destruction since 1950 by Kerry Brougher( Book )

6 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 371 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Timely and wide-ranging, this volume explores in-depth the theme of destruction in international contemporary art. While destruction as a theme can be traced throughout art history, from the early atomic age it has remained a pervasive and compelling element of contemporary visual culture. Damage Control features the work of more than 40 international artists working in a range of media--painting, sculpture, photography, film, installation, and performance--who have used destruction as a means of responding to their historical moment and as a strategy for inciting spectacle and catharsis, as a form of rebellion and protest, or as an essential part of re-creation and restoration. Including works by such diverse artists as Jean Tinguely, Andy Warhol, Bruce Conner, Yoko Ono, Gordon Matta-Clark, Pipilotti Rist, Yoshitomo Nara, and Laurel Nakadate, the book reaches beyond art to enable a broader understanding of culture and society in the aftermath of World War II, under the looming fear of annihilation in the atomic age, and in the age of terrorism and other disasters, real and imagined.--
Lynette Yiadom-Boakye : fly in league with the night by Lynette Yiadom-Boakye( Book )

4 editions published in 2020 in English and held by 220 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Fact and fiction fuse in Lynette Yiadom-Boakye's paintings: they appear to be portraits, yet the people she depicts are not real but invented. Created from a composite of found images and her own imagination, her characters seem to exist outside of a specific time and place: they feel at once familiar and mysterious. This ambiguity resonates again in the titles she gives to her artworks. The artist is also a writer of poetry and prose, and for her, the two forms of creativity complement each other: 'The things I can't paint, I write. The things I can't write, I paint.' Accompanying the first exhibition to survey her career in depth, this publication provides a comprehensive account of Yiadom-Boakye's practice over the past two decades. With essays by the poet Elizabeth Alexander and curators Andrea Schlieker and Isabella Maidment, alongside new writing by Yiadom-Boakye, this monograph reflects the dual aspects of the artist's practice as both a painter and a writer and provides an insight into her creative process. Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, born in 1977, is a British artist and writer. She attended Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, Falmouth College of Arts and the Royal Academy. In 2018, she was awarded the Carnegie Prize

Fiona Tan : geography of time by Sabrina van der Ley( Book )

5 editions published in 2015 in English and Hebrew and held by 125 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The exhibition "Geography of time", touring four countries, brings together works by Fiona Tan that explore the themes of memory and identity in mesmerizing ways. Deeply embedded in all of Tan's work is her fascination with the mutability of identity, the deceptive nature of representation and the play of memory across time and space. Fiona Tan's film and video practice explores notions of individual and collective identity in a world increasingly shaped by global culture and the histories and journeys that form it. 0Exhibition: Nasjonalmuseet, Oslo, Norway (25.09.2015-31.01.2016)

LaToya Ruby Frazier by LaToya Ruby Frazier( Book )

4 editions published in 2019 in English and held by 86 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Since the early 2000s LaToya Ruby Frazier has developed a documentary practice that is both personal and engaged with the social, political, and economic realities of the United States. For her exhibition at Mudam, Frazier presents the emblematic photographic series The Notion of Family, developed between 2001 and 2014 around three generations of women - her grandmother, mother and herself - witnessing the decline of her hometown of Braddock, the former steel capital of the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that would subsequently become a ghost town, with two more recent bodies of work that continue her focus on the working classes and the interaction between personal life and sociopolitical issues. On the Making of Steel Genesis: Sandra Gould Ford (2017) is the outcome of a close collaboration with Sandra Gould Ford, a photographer and writer who was employed in the steel industry of Pittsburgh and who documented life in factories that were closing down; Et des terrils un arbre s'élèvera (2016-2017), is the result of an ambitious project near Mons, in Borinage Belgium, created in collaboration with former miners and their families. This publication, published on the occasion of her show, features works from the three series; a conversazione between the artist, Christophe Gallois, and Claire Tenu; and an essay by Elvan Zabunyan."--
Jutta Koether : tour de madame by Jutta Koether( Book )

1 edition published in 2018 in English and held by 83 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The catalogue offers a systematic and chronological overview of Koether's multifaceted oeuvre. It goes back to her beginnings in the context of Neo-Expressionism in Cologne in the early and mid-1980s, and her subsequent exploration of the colour red as an expressive device--presenting a response to the cliché of male painters. After moving to New York in the early 1990s, Koether began making breathtakingly intense and colourful large-scale paintings that layer motifs from pop culture, literature, and art history in dense painterly gestures. In the early 2000s, Koether's approach became increasingly involved with performance and music, culminating in inky black canvases and assemblage paintings incorporating devotional objects from punk and noise culture. The final chapter is dedicated to Koether's eccentric turn to history painting and her latest appropriations from art history's visual memory. 'Tour de Madame' is the first in-depth survey show dedicated to her work, and will present the astonishing and spectacular scope of her paintings to the public for the very first time
Daniel Buren : travaux in situ, 2010-2011 by Centre Pompidou-Metz( Book )

9 editions published in 2011 in French and English and held by 80 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Su-Mei Tse : nested by Su-Mei Tse( Book )

5 editions published in 2018 in English and German and held by 67 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Marked by her cosmopolitan origins, between Europe and Asia, and by an attention to the sonorous dimension of the world, the practice of Su-Mei Tse involves issues such as time, memory, musicality, and language. Presented in 2017-19 at Mudam Luxembourg, Aargauer Kunsthaus, Yuz Museum in Shanghai, and Taipei Fine Arts Museum, her exhibition 'Nested' is the result of several years of research in different geographical contexts, starting with Italy and Asia. New directions are apparent in her work, including contemplation, our relation to the vegetable and the mineral, the multiplicity of modes of existence, and the possibility of a personal relationship with history. Like the exhibitions, this publication was conceived to be like a notebook: a form that brings together impressions that have occurred in everyday life - be they visual, sound, or memory related - and blends them in a subjective and intuitive way, allowing a whole network of echoes and correspondences to be deployed. Combining texts of Doryun Chong, Emanuele Coccia, Christophe Gallois, and Katrin Weilenmann with a series of 'visual chapters' conceived by the artist in close collaboration with graphic designer Anja Lutz, it constitutes the most comprehensive book on Su-Mei Tse's work to date"--Publisher's website

Jeff Wall : appearance by Jeff Wall( Book )

4 editions published in 2018 in French and English and held by 63 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The first big special exhibition in the new Kunsthalle Mannheim is dedicated to the international photo artist Jeff Wall (* 1946). His trademarks are large-scale backlit light boxes, which appear like carefully composed film stills. The art historian ties his works in manifold ways to art history and, due to his elaborate arrangements, is often compared to modern masters like Eugène Delacroix and Edouard Manet. The Kunsthalle Mannheim puts special emphasis on constellations which present the medium photography like a search for traces. Besides backlit light boxes and black-and white photographs, colourful C-prints are shown as his third important group of works. The exhibition, equipped with major loan exhibits, allows a new view on the artist?s works which have up until now rarely been shown in exhibitions.00Exhibition: Kunsthalle Mannheim, Germany (02.06-09.09.2018) / Mudam Luxembourg? Robert Morris : the perceiving body by Robert Morris( Book )

5 editions published in 2020 in English and held by 48 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book accompanies a new exhibition of the work of Robert Morris (1931-2018), a foundational figure in the history of Minimalism, Postminimalism, and Conceptual art. The exhibition focuses on the role of installation and the phenomenology of direct encounter in Morris's work of the 1960s and 1970s, foregrounding the relation between the sculptural object and the beholder - the 'perceiving body'--In the space of the room. This volume contains texts composed from three vantage points: art-historical essays by Jeffrey Weiss, Caroline A. Jones, and Courtney Fiske consider chief works and themes; personal accounts by dancer Simone Forti and curator and critic Bernard Ceysson reflect on the authors' working relationships with Morris during his early period; and three essays by the artist himself - here translated into French for the first time - address certain fundamental preoccupations of sculpture after 1960: medium, form, space, and time."--Page 4 of cover
Leonor Antunes : joints, voids and gaps( Book )

1 edition published in 2020 in English and held by 46 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Defined by Leonor Antunes (Lisbon, 1972) as "sculptures created in space," the work by this leading artist establishes complex relationships between sculpture, architecture, design, light and the body. She dedicates special attention to the materials she uses, which are often natural or organic, and to the effects left on them by time and their use. Antunes is keenly interested in a number of 20th century women artists, architects and designers, which she thoroughly researches and brings in as powerful references in her own works. This is the most comprehensive publication on the artist to date, spanning her entire career

Katinka Bock : intenso by Katinka Bock( Book )

3 editions published in 2018 in English and French and held by 43 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Katinka Bock's sculptures and installations emerge through intermediary, transitory, or precarious stages. Physical processes such as evaporation, heat, and the circulation of flows are apparent, often through the alteration of materials by interaction with the external environment. This book marks the occasion of three exhibitions that Bock will present in the space of one year, and is conceived as a preamble to the series of shows. Produced in close collaboration with Roger Willems and Louis Lüthi, it focuses on what Bock describes as the "periphery" in her work: photographs that show surfaces, fragments, objects, actions, and forms at rest or manipulated by the artist
