Munch by himself by Iris Müller-Westermann( Book )

15 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 361 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Best known for his iconic painting The Scream, the celebrated Norwegian painter and printmaker Edvard Munch (18631944) had the greatest impact on Expressionism of any Scandinavian artist. His intense, evocative treatment of psychological and emotional themes exerted a major influence on the art of the entire 20th century. Often biographical, his work offers a fascinating insight into the psyche of an artist. No artist observed and painted himself throughout his life as frequently as Munch, and few have revealed their weaknesses and anxieties as frankly. This handsome volume, which accompanies a major traveling exhibition, contains beautiful reproductions of 150 paintings, drawings, and rarely seen photographic self-portraits of startling originality. The texts set them in the context of the artist's life and career, and also examine how many of Munch's preoccupations remain relevant today
Max Ernst : dream and revolution by Max Ernst( Book )

12 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 275 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Max Ernst (1891-1976) is one of the most significant and influential artists of the twentieth century. Influenced by two world wars, he repeatedly questioned and adjusted his repertoire of expression throughout his entire career and reflected on the potentials of art with vast inventiveness. His complex pictorial worlds now seem more relevant than ever before: a younger audience will be able to discover links between Max Ernst's fantasy worlds and their own travels to the cyber worlds of modern computer games." "This publication considers Max Ernst's revolutionary life's work from a new perspective. It examines in detail his Dada years in Cologne, his residence in France from 1921 to 1941 and his importance amid the Parisian Surrealists, the decade in American exile, and the period after his return to Europe until his death. Moreover the contributions by Ludger Derenthal, Julia Drost, Benjamin Meyer-Krahmer, Iris Muller-Westermann, Jurgen Pech, Werner Spies, and Tanja Wessolowski focus on central aspects of Max Ernst's manifold oeuvre."--Jacket
Hilma af Klint : a pioneer of abstraction by Hilma af Klint( Book )

13 editions published in 2013 in English and Swedish and held by 271 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Hilma af Klint (1862-1944), an artist whose work is still unknown to a wider public, eschewed representational painting as early as 1906. Between 1906 and 1915 she produced nearly two hundred abstract paintings, some of which are in monumental formats. Like Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, and Kazimir Malevich, who have previously been regarded as the main protagonists of abstract art, Hilma af Klint was influenced by contemporary spiritual movements, such as spiritism, theosophy, and anthroposophy. Her multifaceted imagery strives to provide insight into the different dimensions of existence, where microcosm and macrocosm reflect one another. Hilma af Klint left more than one thousand paintings, watercolors, and sketches. This publication presents her most important abstract works as well as paintings and works on paper that have never before been seen in public, enhancing our understanding of her oeuvre."--The Publisher
Louise Bourgeois : I have been to hell and back by Louise Bourgeois( Book )

15 editions published in 2015 in English and Swedish and held by 240 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Dauntless, psychological, feminist -- the substantial oeuvre of Louise Bourgeois. Those who have stood under one of her Mamans, sculptures of spiders that symbolize maternal protection, understand the singularity of Louise Bourgeois's artistic approach. In terms of style, her pioneering body of work is complex, and she uses a wide variety of materials -- drawings, etchings, installations, works made of fabric, sculptures out of wood, marble, bronze, latex, plaster, hemp -- to deal with universal questions. The extensive monograph provides an overview of the overall artistic development of Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010) and presents a large number of works, including some that have never before been published. The volume is grouped into themes that characterize her oeuvre, including memory, trauma, relationships, sexuality, fear, as well as the difficulty involved with being an artist and mother at the same time. Personal photographs furthermore document the artist's childhood and family life; several letters and documents are being made accessible for the first time."--Publisher's website

Hilma af Klint : notes and methods by Hilma af Klint( Book )

1 edition published in 2018 in English and held by 46 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

At the turn of the century, Swedish artist Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) created a body of work that left visible reality behind, exploring the radical possibilities of abstraction years before Vasily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, or Piet Mondrian, acknowledged fathers of twentieth-century abstraction. Like many of her contemporaries, af Klint was interested in the invisible relationships that scientists at the turn of the century were discovering shape the world. She strongly believed in a spiritual dimension to the universe and devoted her life to an exploration of this realm. Hilma af Klint's process of investigation took many forms and drew on systems and symbols outside the traditional language of art. Notes and Methods traces the origins of her powerful abstract work. Included are the mediumistic drawings she created with the group of women who called themselves The Five; Flowers, Mosses, and Lichens, a spiritual explication of the plant world; and the Blue Books, in which af Klint catalogued her most important body of work, The Paintings for the Temple. Notes and Methods is the first extensive English translation of the writings of Hilma af Klint. In addition to translations of all notebooks reproduced, Notes and Methods also includes Letters and Words Pertaining to Works by Hilma af Klint, an invaluable guide to the meaning behind the work, compiled by Hilma af Klint herself--back cover
In the power of painting : a selection from the Daros Collection = eine auswahl aus der Daros Collection by Peter Fischer( Book )

7 editions published in 2000 in 3 languages and held by 27 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Time and again in recent decades, art world denizens have celebrated or mourned the demise and subsequent resurgence of painting. In The Power of Painting invites you to take a look at painting above and beyond the rather tiresome modernist myth of the end of painting It proposes to consider the challenges and problems facing painters in the age of photography not as an omen of painting's eventual final exhaustion, but rather as a source of its lasting vitality In the Power of Painting traces how six seminal postwar artists -- Andy Warhol, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Cy Twombly, Brice Marden, and Ross Bleckner -- developed their signature approach to painting in response to the art form's perceived crisis The six groups of works from the Daros collection impressively demonstrate how these painters re-wrote the rules of painting, from their initial experimenting to the canvases that heralded their maturity. A handsome and splendidly reproduced book, indispensable for all those looking for ways out of the restrictions and limitations of modernist and postmodernist approaches to art
