This film is a result of Wenders' enthusiasm for Patricia Highsmith's novels and also of his fascination with America which preoccupied him until his return to Berlin to make Wings of Desire. The moving trains and changing landscapes and the new world of the American gangster invade the Germany of the dying artisan Ganz. Wenders said that he equates American film directors with gangsters and here cast directors Hopper, Nick Ray and Sam Fuller as the art racketeers

1 edition published in 2016 in German and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"In the 1970s, Wim Wenders was among the first true international breakthrough artists of the revolutionary New German Cinema movement, a filmmaker whose fascination with the physical landscapes and emotional contours of the open road proved to be universal. In the middle of that decade, Wenders embarked on a three-film journey that took him from the wide roads of Germany to the endless highways of the United States and back again. Each starring Rüdiger Vogler as the director's alter ego, Alice in the Cities, Wrong Move, and Kings of the Road are dramas of emotional transformation that follow their characters' searches for themselves, all rendered with uncommon soulfulness and visual poetry."--Box

At the core of this film is a homage to Yasujiro Ozu based on interviews with Ozu's favourite actor, Chisu Ryu, and his regular cameraman, Yuhara Atsuta. Wenders' reflections upon the postwar impact of Western values on Japanese culture provide the context. The looseness of the diary format partially conceals a more single-minded speculation: what would Ozu make of contemporary Japanese images?

Die linkshändige Frau(

3 editions published between 1977 and 2009 in German and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A woman suddenly announces her break with her husband by saying that she has 'had a strange idea ... more like an illumination'. There is none of the social psychological rationale that generally defines, in fiction, this kind of declaration. Her crisis does not concern any search for identity but simply a claim for identity already possessed but unacknowledged. Her 'leaving' is more accurately a staying. Her apparent silence and passivity bears witness to a claim for self-possession. She seems to resist the very temporality of the narrative itself. The references to Ozu establish overt connections with the Japanese directors' compositional methods and also a link with the work of the producer Wim Wenders, himself an admirer of Ozu. It has been suggested that Handke's film begins in the void at Rousy Airport where The American Friend leaves off
