Visual propaganda, exhibitions, and the Spanish Civil War by Miriam Basilio( Book )

18 editions published between 2013 and 2017 in English and Undetermined and held by 230 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book presents a history of art during wartime that analyzes images in various media that circulated widely and were encountered daily by Spaniards on city walls, in print, and in exhibitions. Tangible elements of the nation's past - monuments, cultural property, and art-historical icons - were displayed in temporary exhibitions and museums, as well as reproduced on posters and in print media, to rally the population, define national identity, and reinvent distant and recent history. Artists, political-party propagandists, and government administrators believed that images on the street, in print, and in exhibitions would create a community of viewers, brought together during the staging of public exhibitions to understand their own roles as Spaniards. This book draws on extensive archival research, brings to light unpublished documents, and examines visual propaganda, exhibitions, and texts unavailable in English

Re-inventing Spain : images of the nation in painting and propaganda, 1936-1943 by Miriam Basilio( )

4 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This thesis examines competing images of the Spanish nation elaborated by artists, art historiaras and propagandists in their attempts to mobilize sectors of the population and legitimate their political agendas between 1936 and 1943. The Republican government, the Nationalists (a coalition led by General Francisco Franco which rose up in arms), and political factions within both camps sought to establish definitions of a "true Spain" and a "Spanish tradition" that selectively recontextualized and reinterpreted elements of Spanish history. Although recent histories of the Spanish Civil War have demonstrated that the Republican and Nationalist camps were not ideologically monolithic, the effects of these internal divisions as well as regional differences on the visual arts and propaganda have until now not been studied in an in-depth, comparative framework

1 edition published in 2013 in Spanish and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
