A wood frame supports the large portrait, possibly painted by Robert Lindneux. A man wearing a suit drives the open truck. Two automobiles are following the truck up the winding road, possibly up Lookout Mountain in Colorado heading to the Buffalo Bill Memorial Museum in Golden. Cody wears thigh boots, a buckskin coat with tassles, and a hat, possibly a Stetson. Another person, probably Johnny Baker, Cody's foster son and a star of the show known as the "Cowboy Kid," stands looking through the peephole with Cody. A group of men on horseback, including Russian Cossacks, Mexican vaqueros and cavalrymen from several nations, awaits Cody's cue to enter the arena. Cody reportedly liked to watch the progress of the Wild West Show through the peephole. The announcer and Cody also reportedly worked out a system whereby the announcer would signal Cody when it was time to prepare for the next act.

Salsbury was an actor and managed the Salsbury Troubadours before taking over as manager of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in 1883. Born in Freeport, Illinois in 1846, Salsbury first met William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody in New York in 1882. The pair joined forces the following year and Salsbury led Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show to enormous success in the United States and Europe. He died in 1902.
