Vom Klinikdirektor Dr. Ulrich Borstli, mit dem Caplaun einen heftigen Disput hatte und dem er beweisen wollte, dass er gesund sei, fehlt jede Spur. Um den Fall aufzuklären, wird Wachtmeister Studer hinzugezogen, der den toten Klinikdirektor schliesslich im Liftschacht findet. Studer kann nachweisen, dass es keinesfalls der junge Caplaun gewesen sein kann, der den Chefarzt getötet hat. Aber wer dann? Je mehr ihm der stellvertretende Direktor Dr. Ernst Laduner von der Welt der Geisteskranken und der modernen Psychiatrie erzählt, desto weniger versteht Studer: Jeder scheint ein verkappter Mörder zu sein, und doch war es wahrscheinlich nur ein Einzelner, der die Lifttüre entriegelte, so dass der Klinikdirektor, als er sie öffnete, in die Tiefe stürzte.
