"The film is set in 1868, in the newly-created Austro-Hungarian empire. The entire action takes place at an isolated prison, in the midst of a vast, featureless plain. Austrian officials "round up" suspected Hungarian freedom fighters, the remnants of Kossuth's revolutionary army. Jancsó carefully details the subtle techniques used by the oppressors in encouraging prisoners to betray others ... As in My Way Home, Jancsó explores the effect of psychological and physical intimidation on confined human beings."--Audio Brandon catalog

Fényes szelek by Miklós Jancsó( Visual )

1 edition published in 2013 in Hungarian and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Paralleling the dramatic student protests and riots that were exploding across the world in the 1960s when the film was made, The Confrontation is a story of rebellion in Hungary in 1947, after the Communist Party had just taken power. Told in an operatic but supremely naturalistic style with songs of revolution used to punctuate the narrative and shot in long fluid takes, The Confrontation combines a radical aesthetic with radical politics to become a film as revolutionary in form as it is in subject."--Publisher's website

Kristof is fifty, an age when many men are settling comfortably into their lives and are preparing for the forthcoming season of old age and retirement. However, something happened to him when Hungary's communist government fell and society changed. A journalist, he had long opposed the regime in private. The change to a more open society has been unexpectedly uncomfortable and unsettling for him, as it was for many others. Also, despite his own opposition to the regime, the very fact of his survival as a working journalist has earned him the derisive label of "Stalinist." It is not enough to cost him his job, but it does trouble him deeply. There is almost nothing he can do to counter the stigma of that accusation, so instead he draws in on himself and focuses on getting to know his fourteen-year-old daughter better. Eventually he recovers from his multiple shocks and begins to live his life again
