Christian Marclay by Christian Marclay( Book )

13 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 426 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Christian Marclay is a New York-based, Swiss American artist who emerged in both the contemporary art and music scenes during the 1980s. He works across numerous visual media - sculpture, installation performance, found objects and collage - along with music and its artifacts, to create a unique, multidisciplinary art. Also a respected composer and DJ. he has collaborated with John Zorn and Elliott Sharp, among many others. In his visual works he sometimes simply evokes the memory of music, as in The Beatles (1989), a pillow crocheted out of Beatles audio tapes. Elsewhere he examines the cliched images of music-making, for example those found on LP record covers, charismatic, classical music conductors, smiling Easy Listening girls and sultry rock stars. These are then carefully sewn together to form hybrid figures echoing the splicing of the music itself (Body Mix, 1991-93)." "Marclay has presented his unique sound-and-vision works at the Whitney Biennial, New York, 1991 and 2002, and at the Venice Biennale, 1995 and 1999, among many other key international exhibitions. A major travelling retrospective of his work originated at teh Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, in 2003 and ended its tour at the Barbican Art Gallery, London, in 2005. The highlight is his tour de force, Video Quartet (2003), a four-screen installation largely combining Hollywood film clips associated with music, edited together with virtuoso precision."--Jacket

"This volume, which accompanies a major retrospective organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, offers the first comprehensive survey of Graham's work. The book's design evokes magazine format and style, after Graham's important conceptual work from the 1960s in that medium. Generously illustrated in color and black and white, Dan Graham: Beyond features eight new essays, two new interviews with the artist, a section of reprints of Graham's own writing, and an animated manga-style "life of Dan Graham" narrative. It examines Graham's entire body of work, which includes designs for magazine pages, drawing, photographs, film and video, and architectural models and pavilions."--Jacket

Inside is a new reality: thousands of women hustling for the bare essentials needed to survive; the bluffing and pageantry and casual acts of violence by guards and prisoners alike; and the deadpan absurdities of institutional living

Queercore : how to punk a revolution( Visual )

4 editions published in 2019 in English and held by 105 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Chronicles the cultural phenomenon known as Queercore, tracing its underground origins in the 80's as a punk subculture aimed at radical artistic and political expression, and its growth into a global activist movement for queer youth. What began in the 1980s as a fabricated movement intended to punk up the punk scene, Queercore quickly became a real-life cultural community of LGBTQ music and movie-making revolutionaries. As it grew, the movement evolved beyond a celebration of queer aesthetics to become an overt expression of ultra-progressive values, and a revolt against homogeneity and the orthodox norms of a society deeply biased against the Other
Is It My body? : Selected Texts by Kim Gordon( Book )

5 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 93 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Throughout the 1980s and early 90s, Kim Gordon -widely known as a founding member of the influential band Sonic Youth - produced a series of writings on art and music. Ranging from neo-conceptual artworks to broader forms of cultural criticism, these rare texts are brought together in this volume for the first time, placing Gordon's writing within the context of the artist-critics of her generation, including Mike Kelley, John Miller, and Dan Graham. In addressing key stakes within contemporary art, architecture, music, and the performance of male and female gender roles, Gordon provides a prescient analysis of such figures as Kelley, Glenn Branca, Rhys Chatham, Tony Oursler, and Raymond Pettibon, in addition to reflecting on her own position as a woman on stage. The result is a collection that feels as timely now as when it was written. This volume additionally features a conversation between Gordon and Jutta Koether in which they discuss their collaborations in art, music, and performance."

Rodney Graham by Tacita Dean( Book )

2 editions published in 2015 in German and held by 25 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The art by the Canadian Rodney Graham may come across as light-footed, yet in reality it harbors an extraordinary complexity in terms of content and its use of media. His photographs, objects, paintings, films, texts, and compositions contain references to philosophy and literature, to the history of art and culture, that range from Erasmus of Rotterdam and Edgar Allan Poe to Sigmund Freud, Richard Wagner, and Kurt Cobain. While in his early oeuvre he still approaches his sources of material with a great deal of conceptual rigor, in their playful ambivalence between scientific factuality and imaginative fiction his later works are marked primarily by an enormous and intelligent sense of humor.0The Goetz Collection includes works from all of his creative phases and genres. This publication provides substantial insight into this all-rounder’s extensive artistic work of the last forty years and extends an invitation to set out on a journey of discovery.0Exhibition: Sammlung Goetz, Munich, Germany (28.11.2015-23.4.2016)
