Bertel Thorvaldsen : a daguerreotype portrait from 1840 by Marie-Louise Berner( Book )

9 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 142 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The ageing artist is sitting there. Motionless. Behind him is a wall, covered in ivy, to his right a carved relief on an easel. The sun is shining and not a wind is stirring. Only the artist's hand, forming the corno sign, betrays his unease." "The picture portrays the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen in his late years, immortalized by means of the earliest photographical technique, the daguerreotype, named after its inventor, the Frenchman Louis Daguerre." "This photographic portrait, the oldest in Scandinavia, has been a continuous source of fascination and bewilderment ever since its first public showing in Stockholm in 1894. Where was it taken, when and by whom? Over the years, suggestions and arguments have been numerous without yielding conclusive answers to these questions." "By means of a thorough analysis of the picture and the photographic technique behind it, compared to the circumstances around its taking, these questions may now be answered, placing the picture as an interesting contribution to our understanding of early photographical portraiture."--BOOK JACKET
The flower painter J.L. Jensen : between art and nature in the Golden Age( Book )

4 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 25 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Johan Laurentz Jensen (1800-1856) is the only full-fledged still-life painter in the Nordics. His beautiful flower and fruit paintings and his rarer kitchen and game still lifes have consistently found an appreciative audience, both in Denmark and abroad. As the flower painter par excellence of the Romantic Golden Age, J.L. Jensen brought the international style of flower painting to Denmark, transplanting it here in his own style. He took porcelain painting to new artistic levels in porcelain services commissioned by the Danish royal family, for whom he also, as his crowning achievement, decorated royal palace interiors with unsurpassed still lifes of nature on a grand scale. In recent decades, J.L. Jensen's art has begun to attract increasing international interest, but has remained fairly neglected in art history literature. That shortcoming is now finally remedied with this in-depth scholarly and richly illustrated documentation of J.L. Jensen's life and flourishing work.
