The effect of shocks to labour market flows on unemployment and participation rates by Rob Dixon( Book )

7 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper presents an analysis of labour market dynamics, in particular of flows in the labour market and how they interact and affect the evolution of unemployment rates and participation rates, the two main indicators of labour market performance. Our analysis has two special features. First, apart from the two labour market states -- employment and unemployment -- we consider a third state -- out of the labour force. Second, we study net rather than gross flows, where net refers to the balance of flows between any two labour market states. Distinguishing a third state is important because the labour market flows to and from that state are quantitatively important. Focussing on net flows simplifies the complexity of interactions between the flows and allows us to perform a dynamic analysis in a structural vector-autoregression framework. We find that a shock to the net flow from unemployment to employment drive the unemployment rate and the participation rate in opposite directions while a shock to the net flow from not in the labour force to unemployment drives the rates in the same direction
Revisiting Okun’s relationship by R. J Dixon( Book )

6 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Our paper revisits Okun's relationship between observed unemployment rates and output gaps. We include in the relationship the effect of labour market institutions as well as age and gender effects. Our empirical analysis is based on 20 OECD countries over the period 1985-2013. We find that the share of temporary workers (which includes a high and rising share of young workers) played a crucial role in explaining changes in the Okun coefficient (the impact of the output gap on the unemployment rate) over time. The Okun coefficient is not only different for young, prime-age and older workers, it decreases with age. From a policy perspective, it follows that an increase in economic growth will not only have the desired outcome of reducing the overall unemployment rate, it will also have the distributional effect of lowering youth unemployment

Beyond Okun's law : output growth and labor market flows by G. C Lim( Book )

2 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper studies the relationship between the change in the unemployment rate and output growth using an approach based on labor market flows. The framework shows why the Okun coefficient may be constant/time-varying and/or symmetric/asymmetric and that the outcome lies with the behavior of the labor flows in response to growth. The encompassing framework nests the conditions to determine the properties of the Okun coefficient without the need to rely on retrospective arbitrary dating of recessions. The framework also highlights the potential misspecification in conventional models of Okun's Law unless stringent conditions are assumed about the behavior of labor flows. The empirical analysis is based on the stock-consistent labor market flows data developed by the BLS for the period 1990:2-2017:3

An examination of the allusions to Isaiah 52:13--53:12 in the New Testament by R. J Dixon( )

1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The writers of the New Testament make extensive use of the Old Testament in their writings. One passage, Isaiah 52:13-53:12, is of particular importance as evidenced by the fact that it is quoted seven times by five different writers. However, the use of Isaiah 52:13-53:12 is not limited to quotations. Some scholars also believe that allusions from this passage play a vital role in the writing of the New Testament. Of particular importance are the questions: did Jesus understand his life and mission in relation to Isa 52:13-53:12, and what is the nature of the atonement? Other scholars think the writers of the New Testament made very little or no use of allusions to Isaiah 52:13-53:12 in their writings. The goal of the dissertation is to determine how extensive is the use of allusions to Isaiah 52:13-53:12 in the New Testament? This is accomplished by evaluating the validity of the allusions most commonly suggested by scholars. The allusions are assessed using the seven-fold criteria of Richard B. Hays as set forth in his book Echoes of Scripture in the Letters of Paul. In the conclusion, the results of the analysis are categorized according to the probability that they are actual allusions. The dissertation also includes a chapter that presents an exegesis of both the Hebrew and Septuagint of Isaiah 52:13-53:12. This exegesis attempts to explain how this passage was understood by the early church. A chapter is also devoted to the seven quotations from Isaiah 52:13-53:12 in the New Testament
