Associahedra, Tamari lattices and related structures : Tamari memorial festschrift by
Folkert MüllerHoissen(
)
17 editions published between 2012 and 2014 in English and held by 449 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Tamari lattices originated from weakenings or reinterpretations of the familar associativity law. This¡was the subject of Dov Tamari's thesis at the Sorbonne in Paris in 1951 and the central theme of his subsequent mathematical work. Tamari lattices can be realized in terms of polytopes called associahedra, which in fact also appeared first in Tamari's thesis. By now these beautiful structures have made their appearance in many different areas of pure and applied mathematics, such as algebra, combinatorics, computer science, category theory, geometry, topology, and also in physics. Their interdisciplinary nature provides much fascination and value. On the occasion of Dov Tamari's centennial birthday, this book provides an introduction to topical research related to Tamari's work and ideas. Most of the articles collected in it are written in a way accessible to a wide audience of students and researchers in mathematics and mathematical physics and are accompanied by high quality illustrations

Operads : proceedings of renaissance conferences(
Book
)
1 edition published in 1997 in English and held by 181 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
""Operads" are mathematical devices which model many sorts of algebras (such as associative, commutative, Lie, Poisson, alternative, Leibniz, etc., including those defined up to homotopy, such as [actual symbol not reproducible]). Since the notion of an operad appeared in the seventies in algebraic topology, there has been a renaissance of this theory due to the discovery of relationships with graph cohomology, Koszul duality, representation theory, combinatorics, cyclic cohomology, moduli spaces, knot theory, and quantum field theory." "This renaissance was recognized at a special session "Moduli Spaces, Operads, and Representation Theory" of the AMS meeting in Hartford, CT (March 1995), and at a conference "Operades et Algebre Homotopique" held at the Centre International de Rencontres Mathematiques at Luminy, France (MayJune 1995). Both meetings drew a diverse group of researchers." "The authors have arranged the contributions so as to emphasize certain themes around which the renaissance of operads took place: homotopy algebra, algebraic topology, polyhedra and combinatorics, and applications to physics."Jacket

7 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 81 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book is centered around higher algebraic structures stemming from the work of Murray Gerstenhaber and Jim Stasheff that are now ubiquitous in various areas of mathematics such as algebra, algebraic topology, differential geometry, algebraic geometry, mathematical physics and in theoretical physics such as quantum field theory and string theory. These higher algebraic structures provide a common language essential in the study of deformation quantization, theory of algebroids and groupoids, symplectic field theory, and much more. Each contribution in this volume expands on the ideas of

Characteristic Classes. (AM76) by
John Milnor(
)
1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The theory of characteristic classes provides a meeting ground for the various disciplines of differential topology, differential and algebraic geometry, cohomology, and fiber bundle theory. As such, it is a fundamental and an essential tool in the study of differentiable manifolds. In this volume, the authors provide a thorough introduction to characteristic classes, with detailed studies of StiefelWhitney classes, Chern classes, Pontrjagin classes, and the Euler class. Three appendices cover the basics of cohomology theory and the differential forms approach to characteristic classes, and provide an account of Bernoulli numbers. Based on lecture notes of John Milnor, which first appeared at Princeton University in 1957 and have been widely studied by graduate students of topology ever since, this published version has been completely revised and corrected
