The Oxford companion to architecture ( Book )
12 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 507 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
1,500 A-Z entries cover all aspects of architecture, from architects, building types, and movements and styles to materials, aspects of design, and definitions. The Companion offers complete coverage of architecture from around the world, giving equal weight to architecture in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and South America as to the more familiar examples from Western Europe and the United States, and of both modern and vernacular architecture. It covers all periods, from the beginnings of architecture in ancient Egypt to the present day, and yet is strongly rooted in an approach to architecture that looks at its social, technical, and practical aspects, beyond an art-historical perspective. --from publisher description

Sets out to examine the underlying themes of Modern European architecture, assessing their impact, influence, and continuing development. The artist at work : on the working methods of William Coldstream and Michael Andrews by Colin St. John Wilson ( Book )
3 editions published between 1999 and 2008 in English and held by 186 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This is the first full-scale study to focus on the working methods of artists by direct observation - in this case two leading members of the School of London, William Coldstream and Michael Andrews. This comparative analysis contains hitherto unpublished material by the artists and includes the author's copious notes and his own sketches and photographs of the artists at work painting portraits of him." "This study highlights the very different working methods of the two artists, and yet shows their concern to represent through paint alone the reality of human presence."--BOOK JACKET

Sigurd Lewerentz by Sigurd Lewerentz ( Book )
3 editions published between 2012 and 2013 in English and held by 32 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The only comprehensive monograph of the work of Sigurd Lewerentz, features 150 of Lewerentz's designs and constructions spanning more than 60 years. Sigurd Lewerentz (1885 - 1975) was one of the major Swedish architects of the twentieth century and was particularly known for his important religious works. This definitive monograph is the only comprehensive survey of his work, celebrating his sensitive and distinctive response to modernism in a detailed survey of both built and planned projects. These span his embrace and rejection of the classical language of architecture and his turn instead towards modernism and a more austere design vocabulary. The book includes his best-known chapels of St Knut and St Gertrud in the Malmo cemetry (begun in 1916), the conversion of the cathedral in Uppsala, on which he worked for nearly ten years and the church of St Peter at Klippan. The first section of the volume includes essays on Lewerentz's work by the late Colin St John Wilson and the editors Nicola Flora, Paolo Giardiello and Gennaro Postiglione, plus a text on cemeteries by Lewerentz that is the only known piece of writing by the architect. The central section contains a catalogue of Lewerentz's works presenting around 150 designs and constructions in chronological order with detailed descriptions, photographs and drawings. An anthology of criticisms includes a text by the renowned architect Alison Smithson. A complete list of works and a bibliography based on research in the archives of Stockholm's Museum of Architecture conclude the volume

The new Finnish architecture by Scott Poole ( Book )
2 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The New Finnish Architecture is a rich, detailed, and long-overdue examination of Finland's vital contributions to twentieth-century modern architecture over the last four decades. Home to Alvar Aalto, one of the greatest masters of the modern movement, Finland has nurtured many dedicated and innovative architects who continue to wrestle with the lessons of modernism and the legacy of Aalto. This volume presents the work of thirteen individual architects and firms and their engaging and provocative designs. Among them are Arkkitehdit KY, Juhani Pallasmaa, Arto Sipinen, Heikkinen/Komonen, ARRAK, and MONARK, the student collective that won the national competition for the Finnish pavilion at the 1992 World's Fair in Seville. Each architect or firm is presented individually in well-illustrated chapters. Two essays by author Scott Poole give a historical overview of modern architecture in Finland, the work of Aalto, and the work of the rationalist school that followed him in the 1950s--including Aulis Blomstedt, Aarno Ruusuvuori, and Juhani Pallasmaa, among others. The New Finnish Architecture continues Rizzoli's series on current international developments in architecture, following The New French Architecture and The New Japanese Architecture. Forthcoming volumes will feature Germany, Spain, Italy, Mexico, and Austria
