Gerrit Th. Rietveld, 1888-1964 : the complete works : Centraal Museum, Utrecht, 1992 by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld( Book )

6 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 346 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As architect and designer, Gerrit Rietveld (Utrecht, 1888-1964) is one of the great international figures of this century. His work was basically user-friendly and he always tried to see architecture as something for people. Reacting against the conventions with which he had grown up, the driving force behind Rietveld's development became a quest for the essentials of architecture and design. This led in 1918 to the now over-familiar Red Blue Chair and six years after that to the internationally acclaimed Rietveld Schroeder House. This house, built in 1924, signified both an end and a beginning in Rietveld's career. Whereas in the preceding years he had progressed from cabinet-maker to architect and designer of a complete living environment, he was now to concentrate largely on architecture. More and more, he voiced his support for a functional architecture, in which he introduced new constructional methods and where the significance of form and colour was lessened. After the Second World War he contributed to the Dutch reconstruction. Neighbourhoods in Utrecht and Reeuwijk were built according to his design. Within the straitjacket of regulations, building stipulations and budgetary restrictions, Rietveld contrived to introduce in a highly original but flexible manner the functional and aesthetic principles that he had defined before the war. Always experimenting to find the right form, always faithful to his principles, his work was nevertheless of a huge diversity. This variety is what makes Rietveld what he is
Considering Rem Koolhaas and the Office for Metropolitan Architecture : what is OMA by Rem Koolhaas( Book )

2 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 250 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"What is OMA provides a clear insight into the role and significance of Rem Koolhaas and the Office for Metropolitan Architecture. Authors of international repute from beyond the province of architecture examine OMA's work in the light of social and economic developments. The many facets of Koolhaas come under review: his take on architectural theory and the conceptual apparatus he employs, his vision of urbanism and the contemporary city, the designs put into practice by OMA and the research projects of the AMO think tank, which exist outside the immediate boundaries of architecture. This book paints an intelligent picture of the sheer range of OMA's architecture and of Koolhaas's seminal role in the architectural world."--Jacket
Louis Kahn : the power of architecture by Louis I Kahn( Book )

6 editions published in 2012 in English and German and held by 237 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The American architect Louis Kahn is one of the great master builders of the twentieth century. With complex spatial compositions, an elemental formal vocabulary and a choreographic mastery of light, Kahn created buildings of powerful archaic beauty. Among his most important works are the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California (1959-65), the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas (1966-72) and the National Assembly Building in Dhaka, Bangladesh (1962-83). Louis Kahn: The Power of Architecture is the first comprehensive publication on this architect in 20 years, and presents all of his important projects. Essays by prominent Kahn experts discuss the sources, contexts and influences of his work; among the authors are such renowned art and architectural historians as Stanislaus von Moos, William J. R. Curtis, Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen and Neil Levine. Topics discussed include Kahn's pioneering role in concrete construction; the visionary plans for his home city of Philadelphia; his years at Yale University; his dialogue with Josef Albers; and his importance for modern architecture in Southeast Asia. An illustrated biography provides new facts and insights about Kahn's life and work. In interviews, leading architects such as Frank Gehry, Renzo Piano, Peter Zumthor and Sou Fujimoto explain Kahn's significance in today's architectural discourse. An extensive catalogue of works features original drawings and architectural models from the Kahn archive, many of which are presented with high-quality images for the first time. The book is further augmented by a portfolio of Kahn's travel drawings as well as photographs by Thomas Florschuetz, which offer completely new views of the Salk Institute and the Indian Institute of Management

20th century architecture in the Netherlands by Hans Ibelings( Book )

4 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 173 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This richly illustrated book provides an introduction to twentieth century Dutch architecture. Ten concise chapters, each covering a single decade, discuss a selection of characteristic buildings, referring to the major events and developments of each period. Architectural history is not defined here as a cyclical succession of styles or generations, but as a heterogenous collection of buildings and designs which are often based on equally differing approaches. Apart from the international renowned masterpieces by architects like Berlage, Oud, Duiker, Van Eyck and Koolhaas this book includes numerous lesser known buildings which underline the versatility and quality of Dutch architecture"--Back cover
Brazil contemporary : architectuur, beeldcultuur, kunst = architecture, visual culture, art( Book )

3 editions published in 2009 in Dutch and held by 168 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Brazil is one of the biggest countries in the world and is regarded as one of the economic world powers of the future because of its lightning development. But there is another side to the coin: the enormous contrasts between rich and poor, the slums in the staggeringly enormous cities of millions, and the destruction of the rainforest. These contrasts are manifested culturally in a heady mixture of high and low art, technological innovation and traditional handicrafts." "This richly illustrated publication provides a review of the contemporary architecture, visual culture, art and music of Brazil. It offers wide coverage of the overwhelming urban development of the metropolis Sao Paulo and a survey of the powerful and fascinating visual culture - television, video, film, photography, graphic design - in Rio de Janeiro in particular. The section on art is introduced by the idiosyncratic oeuvre of Helio Oiticica, complemented by the work of five of today's leading Brazilian artists."--Jacket

The architecture of knowledge : the library of the future = De architektuur van kennis : de bibliotheek van de toekomst by Rients Dijkstra( Book )

3 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 161 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What will the library of the future look like? In an age in which information and communication are everywhere and the boundaries between producers and consumers of information are increasingly blurred, the question of what a public library might represent is urgent. The notion of a classical library in an academic environment with a formal collection and a permanent staff is already wavering. As a typology the library enjoys a rich history as an important component of public space within the city. The Architecture of Knowledge offers new insights into this bastion of public knowledge and collective memory as well as fascinating prospects for its future. International experts present concepts of collective knowledge, the notion of public space, thoughts on the relationship between (new) media and (cultural) society, and insights into product management and reception. The result is a fascinating journey into the future of an age-old institution, obligatory reading for architects, librarians and users alike

Food for the City goes a step further and presents 13 visions from across the world on the future of food in the city in the year 2050. In addition, a timeline from 2050 BCE to 2050 CE and a richly varied pictorial essay offer the reader an intriguing look at a subject that may be hip and hot now, but has in fact occupied people for millennia. The activist, the industrialist, the philosopher, the chef, the architect and the farmer, among others, offer their view of the future of food for the city
