Two gypsies, Susannah Wells and Mary Squires, were arrested, tried and convicted of the abduction of Elizabeth Canning. Lord Mayor Sir Crisp Gascoyne saw inconsistencies in Canning's story, and continued an investigation. It was later proved that Canning had made up the abduction story to cover up her pregnancy. Squires and Wells were acquitted, and Canning was convicted of perjury. Henry Fielding, a Bow Street magistsrate, examined the case, heard testimony, and published a pamphlet on the handling of the case. -- Bookdealer's description
