A passion for history by Natalie Zemon Davis( )

9 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 696 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In these conversations with Denis Crouzet, professor of history at the Sorbonne and well-known specialist on the French Wars of Religion, [renowned historian Natalie Zemon] Davis examines the practices of history and controversies in historical method. Their discussion reveals how Davis has always pursued the thrill and joy of discovery through historical research. Her quest is influenced by growing up Jewish in the Midwest as a descendant of emigrants from Eastern Europe. She recounts how her own life as a citizen, a woman, and a scholar compels her to ceaselessly examine and transcend received opinions and certitudes. Natalie Zemon Davis reminds the reader of the broad possibilities to be found by studying the lives of those who came before us, and teaches us how to give voice to what was once silent. --Book Jacket

40 editions published between 1990 and 2009 in French and German and held by 337 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

13 editions published between 2008 and 2015 in French and held by 205 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Nostradamus : a healer of souls in the Renaissance by Denis Crouzet( Book )

9 editions published between 2017 and 2018 in English and held by 122 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"One of the most enigmatic figures in history, Nostradamus - apothecary, astrologer and soothsayer - is a continual source of fascination. Indeed, his predictions are so much the stock-in-trade of the wildest merchants of imminent Doom that one could be forgiven for ignoring the fact that Michel de Nostredame, 1503-1566, was a figure firmly rooted in the society of the French Renaissance. In this bold new account of the life and work of Nostradamus, Denis Crouzet shows that any attempt to interpret his Prophecies at face value is misguided. Nostradamus was not trying to predict the future. He saw himself, rather, as 'prophesying', i.e. bringing the Word of God to humankind. In a century marked by the extreme violence of the Wars of Religion, Nostradamus' profound Christian faith placed him among the 'evangelicals' of his generation. Rejecting the confessional tensions tearing Europe apart, he sought to coax his readers towards an interiorised piety, based on the essential presence of Christ. Like Rabelais, for whom laughter was a therapy to help one cope with the misery of the times, Nostradamus saw himself as a physician of the soul as much as of the body. His unveiling of the menacing and horrendous events which await us in the future was a way of frightening his readers into the realisation that inner hatred was truly the greatest peril of all, to which the sole remedy was to live in the love and peace of Christ. This inspired interpretation penetrates the imaginative world of Nostradamus, a man whose life is as mysterious as his writings. It shows him in a completely new dimension, securing for him a significant place among the major thinkers of the Renaissance"--

Historiens d'Europe, historiens de l'Europe by Denis Crouzet( Book )

7 editions published in 2017 in French and held by 111 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Today we are experiencing a moment of rejection of a European ideal, which has, among other things, conditioned more than seven decades of peace on the old continent. Why this crisis which is the bottom of trade of the populist demagogues, in France as elsewhere? How to react to neutralize the forces resorting to the absurd anachronism, to the negationnist error, to the polemic caricature to better mask obscurantist ideologies? The answer given Historians of Europe, historians of Europe is that Europe suffers from a deficit of both historicity and historicization, that the European adventure proposed to the general public is often reduced to a truncated adventure and partial. Much has been written about European construction, about the past of Europe as a collection of national histories and interconflictual temporalities. From Europe as a common referent, there have been approaches, but limited to discontinuous sequences. Yet since the beginning of the XX th century, very large British historians, Italian, German, Russian, French, Belgian, Dutch worked around Europe. Some have invented or promoted another art of writing history by making Europe the instrument allowing a renewal of problems. The others wrote a story that was intended to show that Europe was in the long term a substructure of the imaginary more or less consciously transcending identities. To reinterpret by history the figure of hope and freedom of the spirit that Europe carries in its long duration, and that the patient work of European historians has not ceased to value, to find a desire to be the second part of the XX th century has only realize this is the project of this book which is a book of combat and defense of self-awareness that is necessarily aware of what the other is self .--

5 editions published in 2012 in French and held by 87 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

-- Back cover

3 editions published in 2015 in French and held by 79 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

[4] of cover
